UFC 146 Results: What's Next for the Losers?
Losing is part of the fight business, and UFC 146 was no exception.
Frank Mir lost to Junior Dos Santos by a second round TKO and Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva was dominated and badly bloodied up by Cain Velasquez.
There were other losers on the card who, like Mir and Silva, are now at a crossroads in their MMA career.
What's next for them? Read and find out!
Daniel Pineda
1 of 12Daniel Pineda was defeated by the featherweight division's elder statesman Mike Brown.
However, Pineda isn't a lost cause. He has solid wins over Mackens Semerzier and Pat Schilling so he should't be fired just yet.
Perhaps he should fight Maximo Blanco in a "loser leaves town" match?
Kyle Kingsbury
2 of 12Kyle Kingsbury lost to Glover Teixeira in ugly fasion; the fight wasn't even competitive.
Kingsbury is now 4-3 in the UFC with his most dominant win being over the UFC castout and former Ring of Combat light heavyweight champion Ricardo Romero.
After two straight losses in which "Kingsbu" looked less than stellar, perhaps it's time to send him back to the regional shows to further develop his skills.
Jacob Volkmann
3 of 12Jacob Volkmann lost by triangle-armbar submission to Paul Sass in a short fight.
Personally, I think Volkmann is a great fighter but some fans don't; they think he's boring and a point-fighter and should be cast out from the UFC as soon as possible.
It's possible that UFC president Dana White or UFC matchmaker Joe Silva feels the same way and decides to axe Volkmann.
But, if they don't get rid of him, it'd be nice to see him take on Mark Bocek, John Alessio, or possibly even Mac Danzig.
Duane Ludwig
4 of 12Duane Ludwig is one of the finest strikers to ever grace the Octagon but the sad truth is that his abilities are slipping away; he just has too much mileage on him. He is now 4-4 in the UFC
Thus, what should be next for Ludwig is retirement. He already has two children and his own school, so it's not like he'd be retiring to sit there and do nothing.
He's had a memorable career, why risk damaging himself permanently?
Edson Barboza
6 of 12After suffering a tremendous upset loss to Jamie Varner, it's best to give Barboza a fight that will build up his confidence again.
Perhaps he could face Efrain Escudero? Maybe he could fight fellow ecletic and enigmatic striker John Makdessi in what's sure to be an intriguing fight.
Diego Brandao
7 of 12Ultimate Fighter winner Diego Brandao was humbled against Darren Elkins; the Brazilian's hype train was derailed.
An interesting fight for him would be the loser of Jonathan Brookins vs. Charles Oliveira.
Lavar Johnson
8 of 12If Shane Carwin is Tank Abbott 2.0, then Lavar Johnson is Tank Abbott 1.5!
Sadly, Johnson is little more than a power-puncher. Still, such fighters can be exciting. Throw him in there against Dave Herman or Brendan Schaub and you'll have a fun fight to watch.
Shane Del Rosario
9 of 12Shane Del Rosario was yet another hyped up fighter that, unfortunately, didn't deliver.
He, like Johnson, could face Dave Herman in a fight that would be interesting. Perhaps a fight with Gabriel Gonzaga could be entertaining as well.
Dave Herman
10 of 12Dave Herman lost in ugly fashion, as did Lavar Johnson. Perhaps they are a match made in MMA heaven? Only Joe Silva can know for sure.
Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva
11 of 12Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva was on the wrong end of MMA's bloodiest beatdown this year (so far).
What are some interesting matchups for him to take after such a beating?
He could fight Frank Mir who himself is coming off a TKO loss. He could also face Mike Russow should he lose to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 147 (although if Werdum lost I don't think many people would want to see a Werdum-Silva II).
Frank Mir
12 of 12Frank Mir tried his best against Junior Dos Santos and he failed.
Mir vs. Stefan Struve might be a fun fight to make; it'd provide Struve with a true test!
Or, a Mir-Nelson II could be in order since Nelson is likely dying for a rematch (although fans might not be since the fight between them was lackluster).
Even a fight between Mir and "Bigfoot" Silva would be great to see.
