UFC 146 Predictions: Roy Nelson vs. Dave Herman

Roy Nelson's last bout against Fabricio Werdum showcased the heart and resiliency of "Big Country," but it wasn't enough to earn the victory. At UFC 146, he'll have his opportunity to rebound against Dave Herman.

Since winning season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter, Nelson has compiled a 3-3 record inside the Octagon. To be fair, though, Nelson has faced formidable opposition in Mirko Cro Cop, Frank Mir and current UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos. Against a fighter like Herman, Nelson shouldn't have too much difficulty.

Herman possesses unorthodox striking filled with flying knees and kicks. He holds strong grappling ability and is very effective at controlling his opponent and passing their guard. Standing at 6'5", Herman is also good establishing distance and mixes up his offense well.

There is nothing flashy about Nelson's style, but don't be fooled by his short, pudgy stature—he is surprisingly fast. Nelson is also a versatile fighter, as nine of his 15 wins have come by knockout and six have come by submission. He is an effective grappler, as well, and he likes to use a lot sweeps and pass his opponents guard into side control. 

Herman will look to set the pace early, mixing up his striking to overwhelm Nelson and pick him apart from a distance. However, Herman's style tends to leave himself open a bit, making him susceptible to counter shots, and Nelson will be looking for a opening to land his overhand right.

Herman's unorthodox style will eventually be his downfall. He'll leave himself open, and Nelson will constantly move forward and land one final blow.

Prediction: Roy Nelson via technical knockout in the third round.
