WWE over the Limit 2012: Sheamus Legitimized His Title Reign with PPV Victory

Alex HallMay 25, 2012

Sheamus has held the WWE title for a few months now, since defeating Daniel Bryan in mere seconds at this past WrestleMania pay-per-view event, but the Great White received the ultimate push at this year's Over the Limit.

Sheamus went into the PPV against a star-studded list of opponents in the 2011 Royal Rumble winner Alberto Del Rio, and multiple-time WWE and World Heavyweight Champions Randy Orton and Chris Jericho in the most fatal of Fatal 4-Ways.

The Irish-born champion has risen fast in the company since joining the now-defunct ECW brand in 2009, winning the United States, WWE and World Heavyweight title in just three years and it appears the creative team wants to keep Sheamus' gold around his waste for the time being.

The writers put together a decent feud with Daniel Bryan and the current champion to lead to Sheamus obtaining and defending the belt, but overcoming the odds against three of the WWE's top talent was what solidified this title run to me.

Jericho has spent much of his latest return to the WWE putting over young talent like CM Punk and Sheamus, but his star-power is still very much intact.

When you have Sheamus pin the first ever undisputed champion and the record holder for most Intercontinental Championship reigns, that is a push in of itself.

While Del Rio and Orton may not have been involved in the decision of the match, the sheer fact that both came out of the pay-per-view with a loss, while Sheamus took home the win is two more feathers in the Irishman's cap.

The Viper is still the king of Friday Night Smackdown in my opinion, but Sheamus is clearly on the same main-event level as Orton and has been for some time now.

Sheamus will likely feud with Del Rio next, considering the Fatal 4-Way was originally a one-on-one match between the two before Orton and Y2J were thrown into the mix.

I can't see any other outcome happening other than Sheamus retaining against the nephew of Mil Mascaras if they are to feud leading into No Way Out.

Sheamus seems to be in prime control of the WWE title, at least until this summer comes to a close.
