U.S. Men's Soccer Coach Jurgen Klinsmann Names 23-Man Roster

Daniel ManichelloMay 25, 2012

Jurgen Klinsmann has taken to calling Team USA's tightly packed, early summer schedule a "five-game tournament." The U.S. Men will play three friendly matches and their first two 2014 World Cup qualifying matches over the next 18 days.

The German manager styled the Orlando training camp to reflect the demands, rigor and physical intensity of a pre-major tournament environment. Additionally he wanted both his domestic and internationally based players to compete for the spots that were finalized today.

"

"We want them to pick up the rhythm as fast as possible and make them understand that we are taking the next couple weeks very seriously. We will continue with our rhythm of two trainings a day and see where the players are really at before we make our final decisions on the 23-man roster for the upcoming games.” - May 20, Training Camp

After initially inviting 27 players to attend camp, Klinsmann today selected the squad that will kick things off Saturday night in Jacksonville, Fla., with an international friendly against Scotland.

The final 23, broken down by position:

Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra (Rangers), Geoff Cameron (Houston Dynamo), Edgar Castillo (Tijuana), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Oguchi Onyewu (Sporting Lisbon), Michael Parkhurst (Nordsjaelland)

Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Michael Bradley (Chievo Verona), Joe Corona (Tijuana), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04), Jose Torres (Pachuca)

Forwards: Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar), Terrence Boyd (Borussia Dortmund), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Herculez Gomez (Santos), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)

Klinsmann should feel confident about his front line options—five of the six forwards are coming off double-digit goal-scoring seasons with their club sides. Dempsey had a historic season with Fulham in the EPL, and Altidore led his fourth place-finishing Dutch team in goals.

And while Corona's four goals couldn't propel the United States into this summer's Olympic tournament, the development academy product will see action with the senior side for the first time.

The U.S. follows the Scotland game with a highly anticipated match against five-time world champion Brazil on May 30 in Washington, D.C. In their final warm-up, the Americans will travel north of the border to face Canada on June 3.

World Cup 2014 qualifying commences on June 8 with a match against Antigua & Barbuda in Tampa, Fla., followed by a fixture away to Guatemala on June 12. The U.S.'s CONCACAF semifinal round qualifying group also includes Jamaica.

The top two finishers in the group will advance to the final round as part of a six-team group that will begin play in 2013 for the final World Cup places.
