Did WWE Secretly Rebuild the Tag Team Division Without Anyone Noticing?

The Doctor Chris MuellerMay 25, 2012

Tag Team wrestling has been a joke in WWE for quite some time, and the biggest criticisms tend to be the lack of teams and how quickly teams are being broken up.

Now it seems as if that has changed and no one really noticed. The division itself is slowly starting to build up again and many fans could not be happier.

Kofi Kingston, R-Truth, Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler put on an outstanding tag team match at Over the Limit, which outshined many of the other matches on the card.

On any given Raw it would have been the match of the night, but it was on a PPV where we had Daniel Bryan vs. CM Punk and a fantastic Fatal 4-Way match, so it went under the radar.

When WWE puts two singles stars together, it always seems like the team will fall apart sooner than later. But Truth and Kofi mesh well, and if both men are game, then they could be used as the team that rebuilds the credibility of the division.

The other big development as of late is the actual number of tag teams in WWE. Last year at this time, I think we had two or three teams, and one of them was probably just a stopgap for the people involved.

Now WWE has eight teams, although some of them are questionable.

  • Kofi Kingston and R-Truth as champions
  • Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler
  • Jimmy and Jey Usos
  • Epico and Primo Colon
  • Darren Young and Titus O'Neill
  • Hunico and Camacho*
  • Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd*
  • Curt Hawkins and Tyler Reks*

The final three teams with the asterisk next to their names might not actually be teams. Kidd and Gabriel have yet to appear on Raw or SmackDown together, Camacho is more of a bodyguard to Hunico and Reks and Hawkins are security for NXT.

Even though that would trim the list to five teams, we still have several pairings who can put on great matches with each other.

The Usos and The Colons are two family-based teams who I am shocked WWE have not paired up for a feud.

It is truly a shame that fans today do not get the same quality of tag team wrestling that existed in the '80s and '90s, but they might someday if WWE keeps doing things right regarding the division.

What do you think of the state of WWE's tag team division?
