WWE: Why Daniel Bryan Is the Best Heel in the WWE in Some Time

David LevinJun 7, 2018

When Daniel Bryan came to the WWE, he was as vanilla as ice cream. Sure, he could wrestle, and those who knew him from his days on the independent circuit and in ROH knew of his prowess, but to many WWE fans, he was a neophyte getting his feet wet in the deep end instead of starting in the wading pool.

Now, Bryan is arguably the best heel in the business and maybe the best talent the WWE has on its current roster.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

Forget the droll sound in his voice and the fact he looks like a dwarfed mountain man. Forget the awful angle he had with Sheamus and AJ Lee. Bryan is now the main event star we hoped he would be. And whether he is a face or heel, his act is getting better.

And the fact he is now in a program with CM Punk for the WWE Title is outstanding as far as I am concerned.

What makes Bryan the best at what he does is the fact he can wrestle and has been compared to the greats of the business. Bret Hart comes to mind, but I also liken him to an Eddie Guerrero and a Chris Benoit. He is Dean Malenko with more skill.

But what he does as well as the late Guerrero and Benoit is he can wrestle on the mat or use an array of aerial skills to take down his opponent, who in most cases is much larger than he is (The Big Show, Kane, Mark Henry).

Also, the rise of Bryan’s character was a smart move by creative. All too often, as I have spoken about in previous commentaries, a wrestler is rushed to the top of the mountain only to fall off in a quick swoop. We have seen this most recently with The Miz (who I wish was back in the title picture and more prominent in the company).

I would have loved to see Bryan facing the likes of Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, Ricky Steamboat and Randy Savage. Maybe even AJ Styles.

While the WWE has had hits and misses lately and seems to still be getting its footing with heels and heroes, Bryan makes sense in the roll he is in. Fans appreciate his talent, his skill and his ability. And with the importance of more programming and the use of social media and the web, Bryan’s popularity is even more acceptable as a heel.

So much so that when we discuss whether or not he is great, all we can do is the obvious.

Yes! Yes! Yes!
