French Open 2012 Draw: Why Roger Federer Will Win at Roland Garros

Daniel KockJun 4, 2018

The 2012 French Open draw takes place Friday, and all eyes will be on Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Nadal will enter as the tournament favorite but Roger Federer is the man to watch.

Federer won the French Open in 2009 and finished runner-up in four of the last six years. Last year he came up short against Nadal in the final but lost two close sets before falling 6-1 in the fourth.

He's played well at Roland Garros in the past, and Federer will get it done at the 2012 French Open.

Federer showed in the Madrid Open that he can still play on the clay surface as he defeated Tomas Berdych in the final to capture the win.

It was Nadal who was complaining about the surface while Federer went about his business for the win.

Federer still has one of the most powerful serves on tour and is arguably the smartest player. He utilizes both those skills to his advantage against his opponents.

The 30-year-old has a calm demeanor on the court, which is crucial to have in a mentally-fatiguing sport like tennis.

Federer rarely loses his cool while his top competitors in Nadal and Djokovic have a history of showing their emotions.

The clay surface in Madrid got into Nadal's head, and he let it affect his play. Federer will not let that happen.

Federer knows that he isn't the same player he was five years ago. He's not as quick side-to-side and lacks the same power on his front-hand and back-hand shots.

But he is still one of the smartest and most consistent players on tour.

He will show that off at Roland Garros in the next few weeks. He will place the ball with phenomenal accuracy and be creative with his shots.

If he gets matched up with Nadal, he'll use his advantage mentally to frustrate Nadal.

He got it done at the Madrid Open a few weeks ago and still has what it takes to come out of Roland Garros as the French Open champion.
