Aroldis Chapman: Reds Pitcher Sued by Cuban Man Claiming False Imprisonment

Timothy RappJun 6, 2018

Aroldis Chapman uses his blazing fastball to escape most jams.

He won't be able to use it to escape a potential legal jam he faces, however, as the Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher is being sued for $18 million. From Fox News Latino:

"

The lawsuit was filed last week in Miami federal court claims that Chapman falsely accused Danilo Curbelo Garcia of involvement in human trafficking, leading to his 2008 arrest and conviction in Cuba. Curbelo Garcia is serving a 10-year sentence.

The lawsuit claims that Chapman and his father testified against Curbelo Garcia in 2008, accusing him of outlining an elaborate plan to help Chapman defect from Cuba in return for a percentage of the first contract Chapman signed.

According to the suit, the motivation for the testimony was to curry favor with the Cuban government as an informant so as to re-gain his spot on the national baseball team, which suspended him after a previous defection attempt.

It's been a rough week for the star relief pitcher, who was also arrested for speeding and driving with a suspended license on Monday.

It hasn't been a rough season for Chapman, though—he's 3-0 in 23.1 innings pitched, with 41 strikeouts, no runs allowed, a 0.60 WHIP and two saves.

Dusty Baker has recently given him the nod to get more save opportunities, and Chapman is being groomed to someday take over as an ace of the Reds staff.

So, the future is bright—but his present week has been pretty dismal.

Hit me up on Twitter—my tweets will gladly have another as well.
