Tony Campana and 7 Best-Kept Secrets in MLB
To the average fan, players flying under the radar on teams he or she doesn't follow are considered "secret weapons" in Major League Baseball.
These players are usually young, unrecognized and/or in the shadows of a big-name veteran. They will eventually break out, but to this point remain their respective teams' unsung workhorses.
Here are seven players who are are the best-kept secrets in baseball.
Chris Davis
1 of 7Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis may be known in Baltimore, but outside of the established Orioles fanbase, he is not well-known.
Davis has started this season off very well, which has benefited the first-place Orioles. He is batting .300 with six home runs and 16 RBI. He already has more home runs this year than he had all of last year.
These types of numbers will make teams take notice, but as for now, casual fans are not aware of how dangerous Davis is at the plate.
Dayan Viciedo
2 of 7Unless you are a hardcore fan or a White Sox faithful, Dayan Viciedo may not sound familiar to you.
While his stats this year are not the greatest, the Cuban-born player has come on lately, thriving in hot weather like fellow Cuban Alexei Ramirez.
The big outfielder is batting .242, which is way up from previous weeks when he struggled. He has hit seven home runs and has knocked in 15 RBI.
The guy is built like a brick house, and when he makes contact with the ball, it travels.
Andy Dirks
3 of 7When you think of the best hitters on the Detroit Tigers, you immediately think of Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera.
While this is fair, Detroit's secret weapon has been Andy Dirks.
Batting .340, Dirks has seven doubles, two triples and four home runs. He has also scored 20 runs, proving his value when on the bases.
The outfielder has flown under the radar and will continue to produce for the Tigers while non-Detroit fans wonder who he is.
Kyle Seager
4 of 7Kyle Seager of the Seattle Mariners is batting .276, but he has been an extra-base machine.
The young third baseman has hit 11 doubles as well as a triple and five home runs. He has also been knocking in runs, with 26.
To casual fans, he is unknown, but if he keeps producing numbers like this, he will be a household name sooner than later.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis
5 of 7Can you name the center fielder of the New York Mets if you aren't a fan or rival fan of the team?
I know I probably couldn't in the same circumstance.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis has quietly become the Mets' secret weapon this season, batting .284 with 13 RBI. He has seven doubles and 40 hits on the season, which has allowed him to score 20 times.
Nieuwenhuis has been valuable on the basepath and is valuable as the Mets' unsung hero.
Tony Campana
6 of 7You will come across Tony Campana at some point on the mess that is the Chicago Cubs.
The speedy outfielder has become one of the least recognized and most important players on the Cubs team.
In 29 games this seasons, Campana has batted .306. The most impressive stat in that span is the 12 stolen bases he possesses.
Until the team as a unit starts hitting, Campana's impact on the bases, other than stolen bases, will not show up in the stat book.
Keep an eye on Campana, as he has one of the brightest futures currently on the Cubs.
Jose Altuve
7 of 7If you haven't heard of Jose Altuve, here you go. You will probably know him soon, as he has been the star of the Houston Astos this year.
The young second baseman has been the pride and joy of the Astros this season, but he has been their secret weapon in terms of notoriety. If you aren't a fan of the Astros, you probably are not aware of him.
Batting at .315, Altuve has stolen nine bases, has 14 RBI and has scored 24 times. He has the speed and the batting ability to be a star one day.
