WWE: Why CM Punk Shouldn't Kiss WWE Championship Until It Gets a Makeover

Leonardo SplinterJun 7, 2018

In a recent Bleacher Report article, Brandon Galvin argued that "the only way for WWE to bring prestige and credibility back to the titles (WWE and World Heavyweight) is to make them the main focus of their shows and close out pay-per-views as the main event."

Galvin has a point, but one could argue that another way to bring prestige and credibility back to the WWE title in particular is to redesign it.

LIke I stated in a previous article, "The WWE Championship's history is one of prestige, honor and glory. It is the most coveted prize in the WWE. However, who would believe that if they were to judge the Championship by its current design alone?"

Current WWE Champion CM Punk, as well as former WWE Champions John Cena and Miz, have all weighed in on the repulsiveness of the WWE Championship's current design in a WWE.com interview from December 2011.

In the interview, CM Punk said, "It’s gaudy and ugly. It says 'Champ' instead of Champion! That’s ridiculous. I need a dignified title, not a blinged out rapper accessory." John Cena, the man that introduced the design, claimed, "Either classic or new, it needs a change." Miz awesomely said,

"

It needs to look less like a toy and more like a title. I mean, think about it, when football players win the Super Bowl or basketball players win the NBA Finals, you'll usually see one of the players sporting a championship from WWE. But, it's always the World Heavyweight Title. It doesn't take that much to figure out why that is.

"

The week before CM Punk defeated John Cena for the WWE Championship at Money In The Bank, he told Cena, "When I beat you for that title, I'm probably going to change the way it looks, because that thing has been far too ugly for far too long."

10 months later, the title design hasn't changed. Instead of redesigning the title, CM Punk kisses it before matches. Really? Are you serious? Gross.

Obviously, CM Punk likely has no power over whether the WWE Championship gets a makeover. CM Punk likely has no power over whether he kisses the WWE Championship, either. Regardless, the WWE Championship needs an extreme makeover. It should look as dignified as its history proves it is.

If it's true that Mattel is standing in the way of WWE redesigning their own most coveted prize, perhaps the two sides should have a little talk.
