WWE Over the Limit 2012 Results: Stars on Rise After Strong PPV Performances

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

Even though Over the Limit didn't receive a major build due to a lack of time, the pay-per-view still accomplished a lot in terms of character progression. That's one of the most important things about the marquee shows, so at least in that aspect, it should be considered a success.

Let's take a look at three superstars who should benefit the most from their strong performances on Sunday night. The momentum they gained will carry them for awhile leading up to No Way Out.

Ryback

Ryback was a late addition to the card and had no trouble squashing Camacho. He's still in the early stages of developing his dominant force gimmick, but the biggest thing he has going for him is “the look.” It seems realistic that he could destroy people.

For awhile, he was beating up on local workers, so moving up to actual superstars is a sign that the company likes the direction he's been going so far. The fact it took place on a PPV helps confirm that point and should help him get over with fans as well.

While he still has a little bit more building to do before he's ready to step into the mid-card scene, he's moving in the right direction. Don't be surprised if he's a much bigger part of the company by the time SummerSlam rolls around.

CM Punk

No match had more hype than CM Punk's battle with Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship, and the pair was able to deliver a show-stealing match. Ultimately, CM Punk was able to retain the title and keep his amazing run alive.

In an era where short title reigns are commonplace, holding the top belt for more than 180 days is a major accomplishment and is a sign the WWE feels comfortable with him leading the way. He has taken the opportunity and run with it.

At this point, whoever finally beats him for the title will receive a major boost because he's been basically unstoppable for months. It took many years of dedication for CM Punk to reach this point, and now he's finally getting the payoff he deserves.

Layla

After making her surprise return at Extreme Rules to win the Divas title from Nikki Bella, Layla was able to back it up by defeating former title holder Beth Phoenix on Sunday night. It proves she's going to become a big part of the division again.

There has been so much talk about Kharma in recent months that Layla was basically forgotten. But she has plenty of in-ring ability. and she showed it off against Phoenix in one of the most entertaining Divas matches in a long time.

The creative team could have easily given Phoenix the title back, and nobody would have thought twice. Allowing Layla to retain shows they might finally be ready to bring a little more substance to the division once the three-hour shows begin next month.
