WWE Over the Limit 2012 Results: Brodus Clay's Victory Must Lead to Big Push

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

Brodus Clay has had countless squash matches since debuting the Funkasaurus gimmick, but those are starting to lose their luster. After his victory over The Miz at Over the Limit, it's time for the WWE to give him a true push.

It was the second straight pay-per-view victory for Clay, who defeated Dolph Ziggler at Extreme Rules last month. While both Ziggler and The Miz are going through rough patches right now, they have both spent time in the main-event scene, so it's not like he's only beating low-level talent.

The next month will be key for the Funkasaurus. If he doesn't start getting involved in actual storylines, it's tough to imagine the gimmick lasting much longer because he has nothing else to prove against wrestlers who spend most of their time on Superstars.

Even the amount of crowd reaction has decreased when he starts his dance routine with Cameron and Naomi because the WWE Universe has seen it dozens of times by now. That's not enough to keep him relevant over the long haul.

He did showcase some improved in-ring ability against The Miz. He's not at an elite level by any means, but it's more than enough to give him a chance in a mid-card feud to see how he holds up.

If the company doesn't have enough confidence to at least give him that opportunity, then it's time to scrap the entire Funkasaurus idea. It was promising at first, but it has run its course as far as it can go without meaningful matches.

By the time Raw moves to three hours on a full-time basis next month, Clay needs to have found his niche as something other than a squash master. The extra hour will give the company more opportunity to feature superstars like him.

But if he hasn't made any progress by that point, there's really no reason to keep wasting valuable storyline time for a couple minutes of dancing. It just doesn't bring enough to the show when there are other guys like Zack Ryder who could benefit more from being featured.

Hopefully the WWE realizes Clay continues to lose steam and gives him an actual direction in the coming weeks. At least give him a chance to prove he belongs on the roster for something other than his dinosaur dance moves.

He earned that with his victories of Ziggler and The Miz. Nobody will ever know if he could have turned into something more unless he gets the opportunity to shine.

There isn't much time to decide, though, because what he's doing now is no longer working.
