Belmont Stakes 2012: Horses That Will Ruin I'll Have Another's Triple Crown Bid

Ben ChodosJun 7, 2018

I'll Have Another is horse racing's darling right now, but a few talented thoroughbreds have what it takes to spoil the party at the Belmont Stakes and run down the two-leg winner.

I'll Have Another is the 12th colt since 1978 to win the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, only to fail in New York. History does not lie with J. Paul Reddam's horse.

The odds against I'll Have Another seem even more daunting when looking at the preliminary field of contenders for the race.

Here are four horses that will make it difficult for the Derby and Preakness winner to make horse racing history.

Dullahan

This horse has had a wild Triple Crown season so far.

Veteran jockey Kent Desormeaux rode Dullahan to a third place finish at the Kentucky Derby. Desormeaux was set to ride Tiger Walk at the Preakness, but was taken off after failing a Breathalyzer test.

Javier Castellano, another well respected jockey, will take over for his troubled colleague. While all the drama with the jockeys has been happening, Dullahan has been resting. This horse will be ready to run once the gates open at Belmont Park.

Union Rags

Union Rags will also deal with a jockey change heading into Belmont after Julien Leparoux rode it to a disappointing seventh-place finish at the Derby.

Leparoux will be replaced by John Velazquez, who did well for himself at Churchill Downs and took Went the Day Well to a surprising fourth-place result.

Union Rags rested for the Preakness, and Velazquez may be just what the horse needs to come back strong in New York.

Optimizer

This horse is another one of D. Wayne Lukas' prized thoroughbreds ready to out-run the field at Belmont.

The successful trainer has brought 22 horses to the race and won it four times.

With such an experienced team, Optimizer will be in prime condition to take down the favorites on June 9.

Alpha

Alpha is another one of I'll Have Another's Kentucky Derby opponents that will be looking to take down the two-leg winner this time around.

Word from the horse's camp is that workouts have been going very well, according to Brisnet.com.

Alpha sat out the Preakness and will be rested and ready to make up for its lackluster 12th place finish at Churchill Downs. This horse poses a serious threat to spoil I'll Have Another's Triple Crown celebration.
