Kellen Winslow Traded to Seattle Seahawks for Undisclosed Draft Choice

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

The talented but polarizing tight end Kellen Winslow has been dealt from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Seattle Seahawks.

The Seahawks tweeted out the news.

This trade should come as no surprise. It had quickly become apparent that Winslow and new Bucs head coach Greg Schiano were not going to be compatible.

This situation clearly hit a boiling point.

"According to Winslow, Schiano told him he would not be a Buccaneer for long. He said the team would try to trade him, which it did, sending him to the Seahawks for an undisclosed 2013 draft pick," Gary Shelton of the Tampa Bay Times reported.

A little later in the day, it was announced that the team had signed TE Dallas Clark. And just like that, Winslow is on his way to Seattle.

This is definitely a statement move by Schiano. Winslow had been a key part of the Tampa offense, and by shipping him out, Schiano has told everyone on the team that they have to buy into his message and do things his way, or they will be shown the door.

The only thing that would qualify as a surprise about this move is that he went to the Seahawks, as they spent big dollars adding TE Zach Miller in free agency last season. However, they now have two capable tight ends, and that will give Pete Carroll's offense some nice flexibility.

Last season, Miller's numbers dipped as he was relegated to pass-blocking situations more often than he was accustomed to. This will now allow Seattle to get at least one TE into routes more often.

Winslow is a very capable pass-catching TE. He has hauled in at least 66 receptions and 730 yards in each of the past three seasons.
