Superconferences in College Football Shouldn't Happen Anytime Soon

Michael FelderJun 7, 2018

Friday's announcement that the SEC and Big 12 would be pairing their champions in a bowl game really rocked the college football landscape.

Fans and media saw the move as more than just a bowl game. With the Big 12 and SEC falling in line, much like the Big Ten and Pac-12, it seemed to many that the stars were aligned for a massive shift in the college football landscape.

The move to super-conferences had to be written all over the wall.

Stop. Hold your horses.

While I am rooting for super-conferences as much as the next fan, the changing of bowl tie-ins is not exactly the power move that is going to lead us down the path to four huge conferences. Even the rumors swirling that Florida State is headed to the Big 12 are not enough to make the "super-conferences are here" talk gain steam.

As far as super-conferences go, the bowl tie-in should be read as nothing more than a change in bowl tie-ins. The conferences are kicking out the Fiesta Bowl and going to elevate the stance of the Cotton or Sugar Bowls by providing guaranteed solid matchups.

Super-conferences are on the horizon but still many years away. The Big 12 is still haggling over whether or not to expand as a league. The Big Ten and Pac-12 are still sitting at twelve members. The ACC is joining the SEC at 14 members in 2014.

The conferences are still working to settle off-site games for the playoff. Therefore, the move to bring super-conferences to fruition is still not on the radar just yet.

Perhaps, if the Pac-10 and Big 12 move from 2010 had passed, the true dawn of the super-conferences would be upon us. However, for now these moves should be taken for what they are: a play to strengthen the conferences' standings in the current landscape.

Super-conferences are, hopefully, coming, but a bowl tie-in is not the straw that is going to break the camel's back.
