Chicago Bears: 3 Reasons Alshon Jeffery Will Take the No. 2 Spot on Depth Chart

Gordie GoldJun 7, 2018

The Chicago Bears win the NFC North led by their twin tower wide receivers Brandon Marshall and rookie Alshon Jeffery.

There is a better chance you hear that if Jeffery is the Bears' No. 2 wide receiver instead of Devin Hester or Johnny Knox.

The Bears have not had a legitimate receiving core for years. The last time they had a receiver with 1,000 yards was Marty Booker in 2002.

Here are three reasons why Jeffery will win the No. 2 receiver spot on the Bears' depth chart as a rookie.

No Other Legitimate Competition

1 of 3

Devin Hester. Johnny Knox. Earl Bennett.

When you hear these names, you don't think of legit wide receivers. At the best, these guys are speedy No. 3 wide receivers in the slot.

Hester is the best returner of all time, but when it comes to playing wide receiver, he is hardly noticeable.

Knox is another receiver that has great speed. However, he is coming off a severe back injury and may not be available for the upcoming season.

Many say Bennett has great chemistry with Jay Cutler, but that was back in college. Since then he has not had much impact in the NFL. In his last two seasons, Bennett has not even combined for 1,000 receiving yards.

It is time the Chicago Bears try something new and go with Alshon Jeffery. The three current wideouts have shown over the years that they cannot get the job done, so why should anything be different in 2012?

He Is a Highly-Touted Prospect

The Chicago Bears knew they needed to make huge upgrades in their passing game.

Even after they went out and got Brandon Marshall, they still wanted to improve their receiving core even more.

That is why they traded up in the NFL draft to get Alshon Jeffery with the 45th pick.

Jeffery was one of top wide receivers in this draft class. He was extremely productive at South Carolina and has excellent physical skills.

None of Jeffery's competition came in as highly touted as him.

Sure Devin Hester was also a second-round pick, but that was for his explosive return skills. Johnny Knox was a fifth-round pick and Earl Bennett was taken in the third round.

The Bears would not have traded up to take Jeffery in the second round if they wanted him to ride the bench his rookie season. He was drafted to come in and make an impact right away.

Red-Zone Presence

3 of 3

What sets Alshon Jeffery apart from the rest of the other potential No. 2 wide receivers for the Chicago Bears is his red-zone presence.

Jeffery is such a deadly receiver because he has tremendous ball skills to go with his 6'3" frame.

With his terrific size and knack to make big plays, Jeffery should significantly improve the Bears' red-zone offense.

Teams will be so worried about shutting down Brandon Marshall and Matt Forte that Jeffery is going to see a lot of single coverage in the red zone.

Get ready to see a bunch of fade routes thrown to Jeffery because chances are, there is no cornerback that is going to be able to out-jump him.
