FC Barcelona: 5 Reasons Barca Don't Need Robin Van Persie

Nathan JudahJun 1, 2018

Many see Robin Van Persie as the hottest transfer target in world football this summer.

A sensational campaign for Arsenal culminated in 37 goals and 15 assists in all competitions.

With one year to run in his current contract, it's make or break time for the striker to decide his future.

However, it could well be decided for him as Barcelona surprisingly announced they would not be pursuing the Dutch international any further.

This will come as a shock to many, but it may well be one of the wisest decisions the Barca board will ever make.

Here are five reasons why...

5. David Villa's Return

David Villa's long-awaited return will be like a new signing for the Catalans.

Pep Guardiola's men desperate missed the experienced striker towards the latter stages of the season, especially in the big games.

The 30-year-old will be rejuvenated following a long lay-off after breaking his leg last year.

Many see Villa as a spent force and doubt whether he will be able to rediscover his best form. However, Villa knows all about what's required to compete at the highest level and an extended break will have done the veteran no harm at all—class is permanent.

Sitting out this summer's European Championships will also benefit Barcelona.

Lionel Messi will be delighted to see the striker back. Don't be surprised if Villa hits the ground running.

4. Neymar Is a Better Option

A striker who is 10 years younger and probably £10 million cheaper could very well be a better route to take.

Neymar might be raw, but there are definitely similarities to Messi and Ronaldo in the youngster's play.

A long-term target, the Brazilian could be the better alternative for Tito Vilanova as he looks to create the next era of Barcelona dominance.

Quick, powerful and deadly inside the box, his arrival would allow Fabregas to drop into a deeper role alongside Iniesta.

3. No Sell-on Value

Paying north of £20 million and another £10 million in wages over a four-year period with little sell-on value does not make financial sense in today's transfer market.

It's an incredible amount of money to pay for someone who will not command a big fee at 34 or 35.

Obviously, the board can afford to sign Van Persie, but that kind of money may be better spent improving two or three positions rather than just one.

The Dutchman would represent dead money and that does not make smart business sense.

2. Messi Would Suffer

Like it or not, Messi would have to share some of the limelight if Van Persie arrived at Camp Nou.

Many believe it to be the dream partnership, but in essence the Argentinean would almost certainly see his chances and goals cut in half.

Van Persie's arrival could well push Messi wider than he would want to be and that may not sit well with the 24-year-old.

While results are the most important thing for the club, keeping Messi happy is just as crucial.

1. Injury History

Van Persie had his most productive season yet in an Arsenal shirt—he was the best striker in England bar none.

However, it was also the first time the Dutchman stayed fit for an entire 12 months.

While a complete campaign will reassure potential suitors, signing the striker is too big a gamble for the likes of Barcelona.

The striker played in every single league game this year—a fantastic achievement. But a look back into recent history sets off plenty of alarm bells.

He has not reached 30 appearances in each of his previous seven seasons, which may make this year a one-off.

A constant injury worry is not what Barcelona need right now and at the age of 29, there are younger, fitter and better prospects out there that would make more sense.
