WWE Over the Limit 2012 Results: Christian Proves Experience Trumps Youth

Sam R. QuinnJun 7, 2018

Christian got the job done one more time and stole the Intercontinental Championship from Cody Rhodes in the most improbable of ways at WWE Over the Limit 2012.

His charisma and good looks have gotten him very far throughout his WWE career, but it was his heart that got him a belt this time. In his triumphant return to the WWE—after being absent since March 16—he fought through two grueling matches, one of which was against 19 other wrestlers.

Earlier in the night during the Battle Royal, when Christian was able to hang on to the outside of the apron and thrust his shoulder into the Miz's gut—knocking him to the ground to emerge victorious—it was easy to tell something special was about to happen.

Christian originally chose to fight Santino Marella, but later changed his mind and set his sights on ending Rhodes' run as the Intercontinental Champion.

Despite his fatigue and hurt shoulder, Christian made the right choice in changing his mind, as he was able to outlast a brutal onslaught at the hands of Rhodes. He used his veteran savvy, letting his younger opponent tire himself out with numerous acrobatic, high-flying moves.

Christian just did what he has always done—sit back and pick his spots.

His perseverance in the match against Rhodes was eerily similar to that of which he displayed during the Battle Royal. From the start, it appeared as though it would be all Rhodes as Christian was undoubtedly feeling the effects of this first match of the night.

Rhodes tired himself out, though.

The turning point arrived when Rhodes climbed to the second rope, jumped down and received a powerful punch to the stomach from Christian, followed by a kick to the face and a dropkick from the corner. It was clear Rhodes was expending too much energy to last to the final bell as Christian hung back and rolled with the punches.

Rhodes landed a ridiculous moonsault, but Christian kicked out of an attempted pin, knowing that he needed just one move to end the match. The two tangled and Christian got him in the perfect position for a Killswitch for the win and the Intercontinental belt.

Rhodes doesn't seem to have it all figured out yet, as he walked out and immediately turned the crowd against him, talking trash about the people of North Carolina.

On the other hand, Christian quietly entered the ring and proved why the intelligence of experience trumps the ignorance of youth every time.
