Bayern Munich vs. Chelsea: Blues Must Re-Sign Heroic Didier Drogba

David DanielsMay 20, 2012

Chelsea isn’t Chelsea without Didier Drogba.

The striker has been a Blue since 2004, but his tenure with the club is in danger. However, after his heroic performance in the 2012 UEFA Champions League Finals, the football team has no choice but to re-sign him.

Bayern Munich took 43 shots and 20 corner kicks, compared to Chelsea’s nine shots and one corner kick, but the German’s didn’t have Drogba. Not only did the 34-year-old score the equalizer, but he also launched home the game-winning penalty kick, earning the Blues the W.

But it will potentially be the last time he celebrates in a Chelsea uniform, as his contract expires next month.

According to Yahoo! Sports’ Early Doors, though the expiration date is approaching rapidly, Drogba isn’t interested in wasting energy thinking about it right now. He said after the Blues’ victory on Saturday:

"

Today is a great day for our club, the fans, the players. I am just really happy and I don't know if there are enough words to describe what I feel now. What happens now? We are going to enjoy it and have fun, party together. The last kick of the season and what a way to do it. I don't think we can take decisions on emotional moments like this.

"

Drogba would rather celebrate than contemplate his departure. And his teammate Frank Lampard believes he deserves to. According to ESPN, the Chelsea captain didn’t share his opinion on whether or not he thinks Drogba will play another game for the English club, but the praise he gave him sure makes it sound like Lampard wants him back:

"

People talk about whether this is his last game for Chelsea, but he has been an absolute hero for this club. People talk about Henry, Rooney, the great strikers, but he is right up there. People that score in finals and in the big games, he is right up there.

"

People always say you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. But the Blues know what they have in Drogba, and they’d be wise to do everything in their power to sign him to a contract extension.
