Preakness 2012 Results: Which Horses Shocked the World in Triple Crown's 2nd Leg

Mike ShiekmanJun 7, 2018

The 2012 Preakness was as full of drama as it could be. For I’ll Have Another, that’s just how he likes it.

Jockey Mario Gutierrez has done it again, leading I’ll Have Another to a last-second finish over Bodemeister. The 2012 Belmont Stakes will now have its first Triple Crown contender since 2008.

Here are the results of yesterday’s race:

Which horses defied the odds? Here are the few that shocked the world at the Preakness.

I’ll Have Another

It was deju vu for I’ll Have Another as the horse outpaced Bodemeister in the Preakness’ final furlong.

Doug O’Neill’s horse was not even the favorite heading into the Preakness after winning the Kentucky Derby. That title belonged to Bodemeister, who would succumb to I’ll Have Another's charge in the waning moments.

The horse got out in the top four to start, but hung behind Bodemeister and Creative Cause while they jockeyed for position. Once the horses rounded the final turn, I’ll Have Another made his move on the outside, with Gutierrez rallying his horse to overtake Bodemeister. The horse took the lead with only 20 yards to spare.

The magical team of jockey Gutierrez and O'Neill are on top of the horse racing world, turning this middle-of-the-pack Derby contender into a potential Triple Crown winner.

Bodemeister

The Preakness favorite had victory only a few yards away, until I’ll Have Another pulled out a miraculous victory yet again.

Bodemeister didn’t start off too fast this time, unlike what he was criticized for at the Derby. He had a steady pace throughout, even lengthening his lead late, but Gutierrez and I’ll Have Another willed themselves to victory.

There’s no question this horse has the ability to outlast the field; the Bob Baffert-trained horse has led both races for more time than I’ll Have Another has at all.

For Bodemeister, this loss will be hard to swallow.
