2012 Preakness Winner: Breaking Down How I'll Have Another Will Fare at Belmont

Ben ChodosJun 7, 2018

I'll Have Another is one victory away from winning the Triple Crown, and the colt will be a favorite at the Belmont Stakes.

Jockey Mario Gutierrez and his thoroughbred are not afraid of drama. In both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, I'll Have Another made a late charge down the stretch to overtake Bodemeister.

The horse completed the 1.1875-mile track in 1:55.94.

Nothing seems to rattle this colt and jockey. Even after the incredible victory at Churchill Downs, Bodemeister was still the favorite at Pimlico. Bodemeister's commanding lead through most of the Preakness did not stop I'll Have Another from pulling off the improbable win.

The horse racing world is now starting to fully appreciate this amazing specimen.

The two victories also show that Gutierrez is perfectly in tune with his horse. He knows when to push the colt and when to lay off. He seems to have an almost supernatural feel for exactly how to pace I'll Have Another in order to pull off these dramatic come-from-behind victories.

From now until Belmont on June 9, the horse will be in the hands of owner J. Paul Reddam and trainer Doug O'Neill.

These two have put I'll Have Another in perfect condition to make history and break horse racing's longest Triple Crown Drought. It's been 34 years since a horse has won all three of America's biggest races.

I'll Have Another's Preakness win was nearly identical to his win at Churchill Downs. These remarkable performances down the stretch suggest a pattern, not a coincidence.

This horse, trainer and jockey are all in tune right now. Come June 9, I'll Have Another will have an excellent shot at winning the Triple Crown, regardless of how big a lead the other horses get out of the gate.
