A Look into the Current State of the WWE Divas Division
The Diva's division is currently in a slumping state, as there is a lack of talent and interest in the division. This is a drastic decline from the days of Trish Stratus, Lita, Ivory, Chyna and Jacqueline.
It was only a few years ago when the Divas division had women who knew how to wrestle. Now, only a few of the WWE's women can legitimately wrestle a good match.
With some development in the divas, the WWE could return to having good matches in the division. Here is a look into the current state of the WWE divas.
Valets
1 of 13Before we look at the actual competitors, here is a quick look at the valets.
In my opinion, Vickie Guerrero has run her course. She still generates heat during her entrance and at certain points at ringside, but I think she is holding Dolph Ziggler back. Maybe she needs to move on from him and get a lower-level client that she could help move up the pecking order.
Cameron and Naomi are very popular as the "Funkadactyls" of Brodus Clay. I have heard they are decent wrestlers, but to this point they have not participated in matches since their move to becoming Clay's valets.
Aksana is currently on the arm of Antonio Cesaro, much to the dismay of Teddy Long. Her act bores me, but she is very easy to look at.
Rosa Mendes is currently the valet of former champions Primo and Epico. She is the most popular of that group, as they have signed with A.W. alongside Mason Ryan. She was the only person generating interest between herself, Epico and Primo.
Maxine
2 of 13Mostly a competitor on NXT, Maxine has actually shown improvements in the ring. After earning the "Worst Worked Match of the Year" in 2010 with Kaitlyn in NXT, you can tell she has improved.
She even earned an opportunity to wrestle on Raw a couple weeks ago, even though she took the pinfall in a short match. Her improvements earned her the spot in that match.
She still spends most of her time in NXT. That is probably where she will stay for now, as she still needs to polish her in-ring ability. I could see her being a valet in the future, due to her good looks and decent mic ability.
Kaitlyn
3 of 13Kaitlyn has started to transition to Smackdown lately, as she has been seen backstage lately, mostly on the receiving end of slaps from AJ. It looks like the WWE has the intentions of moving her into a storyline with Daniel Bryan.
After a match with AJ (Bryan's ex-girlfriend), Bryan came out and told AJ he was moving onto Kaitlyn after Over the Limit. This leads me to believe that Kaitlyn will become permanent on Smackdown now.
She, like Maxine, has also improved as a wrestler, but I am not completely sold on her. She may be another diva destined to be a valet.
Tamina Snuka
4 of 13One of the few diva's that is a good wrestler, Tamina has been buried ever since her Divas title shot at Elimination Chamber. I was excited, as I thought this meant the WWE was going to start using her more, but she has barely been seen since then.
Tamina has the lineage, being the daughter of Jimmy Snuka. She also has the in-ring ability, which makes me question why the WWE has not utilized her.
She has relegated to NXT matches since her title shot against Beth Phoenix. They really need to get her back on TV, as she is one of the better workers in the Divas division.
Natalya Neidhart
5 of 13Speaking of skilled wrestlers not being used correctly, Natalya has to be the prime example of the best women performers being absolutely buried.
Natalya is probably the best female wrestler in the WWE and still finds herself jobbing to less talented opposition. And don't even get me started on that embarrassing farting gimmick she was in for a few weeks, because that was downright ridiculous.
Natalya has an impressive arsenal of moves. She has great submissions, such as the Sharpshooter and the Surfboard, as well as great suplex variations and power slams.
She continues to find herself on NXT and Superstars, but losing on Raw and Smackdown. This is probably the most troubling thing in the Divas division.
Layla El
6 of 13The current champion of the Divas division, Layla is a great combination of beauty and talent. She is proof that you can go from non-wrestler to solid competitor with practice.
Layla won the title in her return match at Extreme Rules, pinning one of the Bellas to score the title. She now finds herself consistently on TV, whether it be Raw or Smackdown. She is also one of the few who will find herself on the pay-per-view cards.
She will face Beth Phoenix at Over the Limit, which should be interesting. I like Layla as a champion, as she can actually put on a good match.
Alicia Fox
7 of 13Alicia Fox has been splitting time on Smackdown, NXT and Superstars lately, which is good for her as she is still not completely refined in the ring. Although she is better than average, she could still use some work.
I will give her the fact that she is very athletic and does some moves, such as the Northern Lights Suplex, very well. But, she has been known to botch in her matches.
It looks like she is going to be paired with JTG, which is good because JTG has been lost since the dissolution of Cryme Tyme. Hopefully, Fox can give him some kind of push into the mid-card scene.
AJ Lee
8 of 13For being a petite girl, AJ has some of the best in-ring skills of the WWE divas. Her arsenal of moves is very impressive, which could lead to an eventual Divas championship reign.
She is currently in the midst of her storyline with Daniel Bryan, who dumped AJ and has turned her into a little psycho. This figures to continue on after Over the Limit, as she will probably continue to try and earn the affection of Bryan, who has his eye on Kaitlyn.
Either way, she has been getting the most attention as of late, which is good. I would love to see her continue to compete in the ring, as she has the skills to impress.
Kelly Kelly
9 of 13The girl so nice, they named her twice has been on-and-off TV as of lately. Arguably the hottest diva in the WWE, Kelly Kelly has not done anything major since WrestleMania, where she and Maria Menounos defeated Eve Torres and Beth Phoenix.
I am still not convinced of her in-ring abilities, despite the fact that she has improved. I mean, she still doesn't run off the ropes correctly.
Either way, the WWE needs to do something with her, as she still gets one of the biggest pops out of all the divas. She is adored by fans, and the WWE needs to continue capitalizing on that.
Eve Torres
10 of 13Eve Torres has been moved back to a non-wrestling role as of late, which is fine because the division is slumping anyways. She has become one of the most prominent divas on camera, due to her administrative job under John Laurinaitis.
She is one of the biggest heels in the WWE right now, as she has shown her allegiance with "Big Johnny." She has done a great job of it as well, as it has come at the expense of beloved faces such as Zack Ryder and the Big Show.
I always thought she was a solid in-ring performer, but her step back to the administrative role has done her wonders.
Beth Phoenix
11 of 13Beth Phoenix was the alpha female of the Divas division for a long time, before she dropped the title on Raw out of nowhere. She is another top competitor that has been buried lately, which led to her dropping of the title.
She is a diva in the wrong era, as it would have been great to have her when Trish Stratus, Lita and company were working hard to keep the division respectable. She has a great arsenal of moves, which exemplify how great of a wrestler she is.
She has a title shot at Over the Limit, but everybody is waiting for Kharma's return to see them match up with one another.
Kharma
12 of 13Kharma is still on maternity leave, but should come back at anytime now. The monster that the Divas division could use may kick-start the heart of the division upon her return.
We last saw her at the Royal Rumble, where she eliminated Hunico before being eliminated herself. She is a dominating wrestler who could make for great feuds with the top divas.
Until then, we wait for her return anxiously. Many people can see her returning at Over the Limit to put the division on notice, but that waits to be seen.
Conclusion
13 of 13There you have it, the WWE Divas division. There is a lot of work that needs to be done to help the division, but the talent is there, it just needs to be unburied.
Of course, I could suggest the return of Lita and maybe Trish Stratus to gain further interest in the division. They are both great wrestlers that made the division exciting years ago.
Until then, the WWE needs to realize the talent it has and use it more effectively. Wrestlers like Natalya are very capable of putting on great performances and interesting fans.
