Floyd Mayweather: Will Khan vs. Ortiz Decide Mayweather's Next Opponent?

Justin TateJun 1, 2018

Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO) is en route to losing his June 23rd opponent Andre Berto (28-1, 22 KO) after Berto tested positive for steroids.

Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO) just recently lost his scheduled fight with Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO) after Peterson also tested positive for steroids not too long ago.

Ortiz and Khan are both promoted by Golden Boy Promotions. A fight between the two seems like a great competitive fight that can be easily made.

Best of all, Ortiz vs. Khan can decide who gets to face Floyd Mayweather (43-0, 26 KO) after he gets out of jail. Mayweather is left without an obvious opponent for the latter half of the year.

A fight with Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KO) is not likely. A rematch with Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO) would be groan-inducing at this point.

While the first Mayweather-Cotto matchup was a great fight, Cotto was clearly beaten eight rounds to four. That's not close enough to warrant talk of a rematch.

Ortiz being sucker-punched by Mayweather last year puts a certain cloud of unfinished business over the event. If Ortiz beats Khan, he may be able to be sold as new and improved for a rematch.

If Khan beats Ortiz in a more decisive manner than Mayweather did, he'll be seen as one-upping him. That should serve both fighters well in the buildup to Mayweather vs. Khan in December.

Either way, the fight fans get a young fighter in his prime as Mayweather's next target. At age 35, he's no spring chicken, and the haters will pay to see if a young dog can pluck his feathers.
