I'll Have Another Triple Crown: Latest on Derby Winner's Preakness Chances
I'll Have Another may not be the favorite in this year's Preakness Stakes, but not being a favorite clearly didn't hurt this horse in his victory at Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby.
Bodemeister held the lead for the majority of that race, but I'll Have Another surged ahead at the end to take the Derby by a nose.
It remains to be seen if both of the favorites in this race, Bodemeister and I'll Have Another, will have enough left in the tank to run two good races in two weeks. Horses don't race as often anymore, so this might be unknown territory for both.
But, I'll Have Another has a distinct advantage.
Clearly, Bodemeister likes to run a fast race from beginning to end, and while that nearly worked at Churchill Downs, it might not work at Pimlico, despite a shorter track. Bodemeister might find himself gassed sooner in this race if he tries to run the same way.
On the other hand, I'll Have Another's closing speed will allow him to save some of his energy by laying back and waiting for the right time to strike. If he can save enough for the stretch run, I'll Have Another can turn on the jets and blow by his competition to victory.
There is one horse that stands between I'll Have Another and winning the second leg of the triple crown. The recipe for victory is already known against Bodemeister and I'll Have Another could very well win like that again by making his move slightly sooner on the shorter track.
I'll Have Another's approach might have to be tweaked slightly to adjust to the new track, but he has as good a chance as any to win the second leg of the triple crown and flirt with history.
