Norwich City: 6 Factors That May Have Influenced Grant Holt

James KentJun 7, 2018

So, I write this as Norwich City fans are in complete shock that their star striker Grant Holt has handed in a transfer request. A request that has now been turned down, but this story is far from dead as we tray to get to the bottom of how this happened.

Holt has been superb for Norwich in the Premier League with his superb hard working displays and the small matter of 15 goals

Desire to Play for England

1 of 6

After the way that Holt has performed this season, it was a shocking decision to leave him out of the England squad for Euro 2012.

It seems strange that the decision comes just days after his omission was revealed, So, maybe Norwich's No. 9 has realized he needs a move to get an opportunity to play international football.

Wants More Money

Now, this is where Holt's agent has been in his ear.

He sees a chance to get one more payout on Holt, so it is either about getting him signed up on a new contract at Norwich, or a move elsewhere.

Either way, the agent can boast about the pay deals available elsewhere.

Wants to Move Back North

Some fans have suggested that Holt may be looking to move back to the north.

If that is the case, could he stay in the Premier League with a move to Newcastle or Sunderland?

However, if it is only a move to a Championship club, then he may have to reconsider how badly he wants that move to the north.

Related to Speculation on Manager Paul Lambert

4 of 6

There has been intense speculation that manager Paul Lambert could be moving on in the summer. The Scot has been linked with possible roles with Aston Villa and Liverpool.

Grant Holt has recently stated that he wants Lambert to stay just days later he has announced he wants out.

Seems all a bit strange.

Maybe Lambert has revealed to his players that he will be moving on and Holt simply doesn't want to be part of a Norwich City team that doesn't feature Paul Lambert.

Wants to Be the Main Striker at the Club

I think most of us expected Holt to start more games in the Premier League than he did.

The fact that he wasn't always starting games but still finished as top scorer offers some indication of how good he was. However, he did score a number of those goals after coming off the bench.

Paul Lambert chose to rotate his squad and used a number of different options up front. No player has a divine right to start games, but you could understand why he would expect to start games when fit, given his excellent record.

Has Alreadly Been Replaced

We know that Lambert likes to update his squad at every opportunity. We also know that Lambert is no slouch in the transfer market. So there is every chance that he is close to signing a long-term replacement for Grant Holt.

One possibility is Huddersfield Town striker Jordan Rhodes.

Who knows? But Holt doesn't want to stick around if he is all of a sudden going to be a backup striker.
