Preakness 2012 Horses: Which Entries Have No Chance to Win?

Ryan RudnanskyMay 19, 2012

When you are already considered a long shot before the post draw at the 2012 Preakness Stakes, then receive poor position, there isn't a whole lot to like.

And so goes it for several horses in this year's 11-horse field at Pimlico.

I expect these three horses to fade back into irrelevance at the 2012 Preakness (complete with post positions and odds via the official Preakness site).

3. Cozzetti (No. 11, 30/1)

Dating back to 2012, no horse has placed in a field of more than 10 horses at the No. 11 slot at the Preakness Stakes. Cozzetti placed fourth at the Arkansas Derby, but it was by a wide margin and he's only won once in seven career starts. Trying to catch everybody from the outside slot is going to be extremely difficult.

2. Optimizer (No. 10, 30/1)

Starting in the No. 10 slot isn't much better than beginning in the No. 11 slot. Plus, Optimizer has only placed four times in 10 career races. His lone victory was in his first career race in August 2011. Yes, Optimizer has five-time Preakness winner D. Wayne Lukas on his side, but that won't be enough given the odds stacked against him.

1. Zetterholm (No. 4, 20-1)

Zetterholm doesn't have much experience against a full-fledged field, despite his three wins in 2012. He's also placed in the historically-poor No. 4 slot inside of strong horse Went the Day Well. I actually think his odds should be worse.
