Boise State Football: The Broncos Add Another Recruit for 2012
Head coach Chris Petersen probably still has nightmares about the TCU game in 2011, but it probably isn't just the kicking game that made him nauseous.
If you remember, it was in that contest that the Broncos' secondary was scorched for 473 yards and five touchdowns.
Considering that TCU had 506 total yards in that game, to say the passing game was the difference is a severe understatement.
To be fair, the Broncos' secondary was riddled with injuries and new and inexperienced players were asked to step up—they didn't.
Fast forward to this year. Currently, the Broncos have some decent projected starters in the defensive secondary, but depth could still be a real issue.
Players like Jerrell Gavins, Ebo Makinde, Jamar Taylor, Lee Hightower, Bryan Douglas and Hazen Moss are all looking for playing time at their various positions in the defensive secondary.
However, Coach Petersen must still not be comfortable with the depth of his roster. Chadd Cripe of the Idaho Statesman is reporting that Boise State has added another defensive recruit to its 2012 class.
Junior College transfer Deontae Florence of College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California is slated to join the Broncos in August as a cornerback. He will be a redshirt sophomore, which means he will have three years of eligibility left, according to Cripe.
Florance played his high school ball in Largo, Florida, and, if you watch his game film, it is easy to see that he is quick, has good hands and breaks on the ball extremely well.
In fact, Cripe quotes Florence's coach at College of the Desert in that Idaho Statesman article. "He's got fantastic instincts," coach Dean Dowty said. "He really breaks on the ball well...He's got phenomenal ball skills."
Sounds like the three things you look for in a defensive back. He is also fast, which doesn't hurt either.
If the Spring game is any indication, the Broncos will be solid again on the defensive side of the ball. They may not be as good up front in 2012, but they will no doubt be improved in the secondary.
Reports on Scout.com indicate that Florence had offers from Georgia Southern, Troy and Boise State. Florence is the third cornerback to be included in the Boise State 2012 recruiting class.
The other two are Chaz Anderson out of Loyala High School in Los Angeles and Donte Deayon from Summit High School in Rialto, California.
