2012 Atlanta Falcons Training Camp Roster Overview: Quarterbacks
The NFL is starting its organized team activities and offseason workouts soon. Then in July, there is going to be training camp.
This year, training camp rosters were extended to 90 players to allow more players shots at their respective teams.
This series will take a look at all 90 players for the Atlanta Falcons on 2012's training camp roster. We'll take a unit-by-unit look starting with the quarterbacks and will make our way through all the way to the specialists.
Matt Ryan
1 of 42011 Role: Starting quarterback
2012 Role: Starting quarterback
Matt Ryan has led the Falcons to a 43-19 record and is the unquestioned leader in the locker room. He has also had the kind of career where every single season has been a career-best year. This is something that will make new coordinator Dirk Koetter that much happier than he was in 2011 with rookie Blaine Gabbert.
Chris Redman
2 of 42011 Role: No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart
2012 Role: Competing for the No. 2 quarterback role with John Parker Wilson and Dominique Davis
Mike Smith said that every position will be a competition. While Matt Ryan is guaranteed to win the starting quarterback job because of his results the past four years, Redman will have to compete with the two promising young quarterbacks behind him.
Redman's best attributes are his knowledge and experience, but he isn't the leader that Ryan is. He also doesn't have the raw power in his arm that Wilson or Davis have.
John Parker Wilson
3 of 42011 Role: Third-string quarterback
2012 Role: Competing for the No. 2 quarterback role with Chris Redman and Dominique Davis
Wilson was on the practice squad and even was on the 53-man roster as the Falcons' third quarterback over the past three years. He has a cannon but doesn't have the accuracy that Redman and Ryan have.
Dominique Davis
4 of 42011 Role: Starting quarterback for East Carolina University
2012 Role: Competing for the No. 2 quarterback role with Chris Redman and John Parker Wilson
Davis is competing for not just a roster spot but the backup quarterback role. He was a two-year starter for the Pirates and has the mobility, arm strength and ability to end up as the top backup to Ryan. But he may not get there this year.
