Antonio Margarito: Injury Forces Superstar to Delay in-Ring Return vs Abel Perry
Antonio Margarito has suffered an Achilles injury and has had to postpone his May 26 bout at the Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona against Abel Perry.
ESPN's Dan Rafael reported the news and passed along this quote from Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti:
"The doctor said if he had continued to train it would most likely have resulted in an Achilles tear, so May 26 is out. Now we will wait to see when he can go, but we hope it's sometime this summer.
"
Rafael speculated that the fight could be rescheduled for July 21st.
The Achilles injury is just the latest setback for Margarito. He is coming off of a brutal 10-round KO to Miguel Cotto.
Margarito (38-8, 27 KOs) was unable to continue that fight due to massive swelling in his right eye. That is the same right eye that had been surgically repaired and threatened to end his boxing career.
He has tremendous incentive to come back from his latest injury with fury. If he can win this fight, he will likely be in line for another title shot and the accompanying big payday.
There will still be fighting at the Casino Del Sol on May 26th—it will just have a new main event. Rafael reports that the 10-round welterweight bout of Jesus Soto Karass (24-7-3, 16 KOs) vs. Said El Harrak (10-1-1, 5 KOs) will be the centerpiece of the boxing action.
