Kellen Moore: Weak Arm Will Cause QB to Miss Final Cut for Detroit Lions

Jesse ReedMay 14, 2012

Kellen Moore is proving all his detractors right at the Detroit Lions' rookie mini-camp. There was a good reason he didn't get drafted in April, and his weak arm is going to be a deal-breaker once the final cuts come down at the end of training camp in August.

After losing Drew Stanton to the Indianapolis Colts via free agency, the Lions were surely hoping Moore could come in and take his roster spot.

According to John Kreger of CBSSports.com things aren't looking good:

QB Kellen Moore's passing improved during Detroit's rookie mini-camp practice Sunday, but his performance over the three-day orientation left a lot to be desired. Moore wasn't consistent in drills, and his effort gave credence to questions surrounding his arm strength that saw him go undrafted. Non-roster invitee QB RJ Archer, who was given leave from the Arena Football League's Georgia Force to attend Detroit's workouts, outperformed Moore at times.

"

Archer isn't expected to have any chance to make the roster, so the fact that he outperformed Moore is doubly damning.

Moore possesses a trifecta of poor attributes as it relates to being an NFL quarterback: He is short (6'0"), he isn't athletic and he doesn't have a strong arm—and that's putting it mildly.

Players can overcome one or two of these deficiencies with determination and grit, but there isn't a quarterback in the league right now that can claim success with having dealt with all three.

One of his peers, Russell Wilson, is shorter than Moore. Wilson is 5'11", but he is also an athletic freak who can kill opponents with his legs and who possesses a Howitzer cannon for an arm.

In an earlier report, John Kreger of CBSSports.com noted that while general manager Martin Mayhew valued having three quarterbacks on the roster, head coach Jim Schwartz said there was no guarantee they'd use three quarterbacks.

The hard, honest truth about Moore is that he just doesn't possess an NFL arm. He can't make all the throws, and at this level of competition that kind of limitation just kills a quarterback's chances to make the roster.

Moore won't buck the trend in 2012.
