UEFA Champions League: Keys to Chelsea Taking Down Bayern Munich

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

Chelsea is on the verge of capturing their first ever UEFA Champions League crown. They simply have to take down Bayern Munich.

Well, simply is not the best word. There will be nothing simple about this task. It would be foolish to expect Chelsea to take down the more talented German side. However, Chelsea's run is full of improbable victories.

They have accomplished this with belief, spectacular team play and executing a solid game plan.

Here is what they need to happen to cap off this amazing run with a trophy.

Didier Drogba Must Outplay Mario Gomez

Both of these strikers are the heart of their team and are fantastic players. Their play is always key to their team's success. However, Gomez does not shoulder as big a burden of moving his team as Drogba.

With Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben, Bayern has a much greater chance of withstanding a subpar game from Gomez than Chelsea has of withstanding one from Drogba.

Drogba is going to have to be at his best, and he absolutely has to make a bigger impact than Gomez.

Of course, there is only so much of that equation he can control. Which leads to my next point.

Phenomenal Centre-Back Play

Chelsea's defense has to slow down Gomez, and this all begins with their centre-back play. Unfortunately for Chelsea, they are at a disadvantage from the start.

John Terry will miss this contest following a red card, and—as if that wasn't enough—Gary Cahill and David Luiz are dealing with nagging injuries.

This thin line is going to have to be on top of their game because they will definitely be tested. To contain Gomez, it is going to take an amazing group effort.

Start Off Strong

Seeing as how this game is being played in their own Allianz Arena, it is safe to say that Bayern will enjoy quite the advantage in the cheering section.

Chelsea must do what they can to silence this crowd early. If they can get out to an early advantage, they can actually get this fact working against them.

They can suck the air out of the place and set an ominous tone. However, if they fall behind early, they are going to have to deal with a raucous crowd fueling the confidence and energy of their opposition.
