Tottenham vs. Fulham: Player Ratings from Spurs' 2-0 Win
Tottenham knew they needed something good and something miraculous to happen on Sunday to be secured of third place and a spot in next season's Champions League.
A win at home against Fulham would've been good. The club had been improving in form lately, but coming into White Hart Lane they had a pitiful 4-5-9 record away from Craven Cottage.
Arsenal not winning against West Bromwich Albion would've been miraculous.
Too bad West Bromwich Albion had to go and be, well, West Bromwich Albion.
Tottenham, however, won easily against a Fulham side without its greatest weapon in Clint Dempsey. Emmanuel Adebayor got on the board before two minutes had elapsed and Spurs never looked back. Jermain Defoe scored a signature second-half goal in the 63rd minute to make the final score 2-0.
North London fans will have to wait until next Saturday to see where their Spurs will be slotted at the beginning of next season. If Chelsea wins against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, Tottenham will be in Europa. If Chelsea loses, Tottenham makes it into the Champions League.
Despite all the questions, Spurs looked absolutely clinical in their quest to wrap up fourth place in the league table. How did the individual players grade out? Check out my individual ratings and tell me if you agree!
Goalkeeper
1 of 4Brad Friedel: 7.5
Great job for Friedel to end the season on a high note, collecting his 13th clean sheet of the season and ending the year in third place for the Premier League's Golden Glove. Made his best stop in the middle of the first half from a rocket of a shot from Fulham striker Moussa Dembele in the 35th minute. Stayed alert throughout and stopped all five of Cottagers' shots on target.
Defenders
2 of 4Kyle Walker: 6.0
Up and down all match. Had a few good passes to Lennon and had a great attempt at goal early, but was turned around several times and fell awkwardly at the beginning of the second half. Would have liked to have seen a better performance from the international hopeful to end the season with.
Younes Kaboul: 7.5
He displayed physical play, great clearances and a number of dispossessions. He gave everything to the match. Was as impressive as ever at centre-back and never looked troubled throughout the match. Had to leave at the end of the match due to a knee injury, but put in a great 75 minutes.
William Gallas: 6.5
The rarely used Frenchman earned a start in a pivotal match against Fulham at the end of the season. A few low spots on the afternoon, as he had early difficulty with Pavel Pogrebnyak but grew into the game and managed to get the better of the Russian over the course of the match.
Gareth Bale: 7.5
Started at the very unfamiliar position of left-back but often inched his way up into familiar territory at left-wing. Enthusiastic as ever, sprinting across the the box. Even though he was all over the pitch, for the most part, he never left the left-back position exposed to Fulham's attack. Great, solid play for the Welshman.
Ryan Nelsen: 6.5
Great job coming in for Walker in the 50th minute and paired well with Kaboul at centre-back. Might have earned his way onto the roster for next year's Spurs team. We'll see.
Adam Smith: 6.5
Had his first (and only) appearance of the season coming on for Kaboul in the 75th minute. Didn't blow the game, so that's good, right?
Midfielders
3 of 4Aaron Lennon: 8.0
Lennon did a great job keeping pace the whole match and had a solid assist on Jermain Defoe's goal in the 63rd minute. He had several runs along the right sideline, and I loved his enthusiasm and energy. Want to see more of him at right-wing next season.
Sandro: 7.0
Loved seeing Sandro chase down Moussa Dembele all match. Fulham's only chance was for Dembele to get hot offensively and the Brazilian never let him have a moment to catch his breath.
Luka Modric: 7.0
Great pace and kept things going as the midfield's general. Moved more central after Defoe came on but still looked solid. Spurs will miss him if the Croatian transfers this season.
Jake Livermore: 7.5
Paired well with Sandro throughout the match. Could be a real addition to Spurs if he continues to improve next season in early European tournament matches (whether they be Champions League or Europa League).
Forwards
4 of 4Rafael van der Vaart: 6.5
Van der Vaart was in the right place at the right time again, this time in the second minute to take advantage of Fulham's poor marking and get the ball to Adebayor for an early score. Declined in form as the match went on and was subbed out in favor of Defoe in the 60th minute.
Emmanuel Adebayor: 7.0
Paired well with Van der Vaart in the first few minutes and finished the season with a score (which is always very, very good). Surprisingly, he struggled in the air in Fulham's box, but he regained his aerial composure in the second half.
Jermain Defoe: 7.5
Loved that the oft-used striker ended his season with his trademark "come off the bench and score a goal that looks slightly accidental" move. Wreaked havoc on Fulham's defense in his half hour on the pitch. Great way to end the season.
