WWE Over the Limit 2012: 8 Twists the Cena-Laurinaitis Match Could Take

Sharon GlencrossJun 7, 2018

At the Over the Limit pay-per-view on May 20, John Cena will take on current Raw and SmackDown general manager John Laurinaitis in one of the most anticipated matches on the card.

After sending former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar after Cena—a move that backfired spectacularly when Cena managed to pin the MMA behemoth clean at Extreme Rules—an annoyed Laurinaitis seemingly decided that if you needed a job done right, you had to it yourself.

And so, the GM boldly announced on Raw two weeks ago that it was he, not the widely expected Lord Tensai, who would be taking on his wayward employee at Over the Limit.

Of course, knowing the conniving authority figure, Laurinaitis won't be playing fair and square at the PPV and will have something hidden up his sleeve, as he attempts to beat Cena and crush his rebellious spirit once and for all.

One thing is for sure: Wrestling fans should not be naive enough to think this will be a straight one-on-one singles match without outside interference or ringside shenanigans.

With this in mind, here are 8 twists we think the match at Over the Limit could take.

Eve Will Run in During the Match

1 of 8

Duplicitous diva Eve Torres has emerged as John Laurinaitis's right-hand woman in recent weeks.

Whether scolding The Big Show for mocking the GM's ridiculously deep voice or joining in the cruel tormenting of ousted SD GM Teddy Long in backstage segments, the former Diva Search winner has been fiercely loyal to Laurinaitis and willing to do anything to make him happy.

Considering this, surely Eve running in during the PPV match and attempting to sway things in the favor of her boss cannot be out of the question?

Teddy Long Could Help Cena Win

2 of 8

Poor Teddy Long.

Since losing his spot as SmackDown GM per the WrestleMania stipulation, he has faced humiliation and degradation as Laurinaitis, Eve, Aksana and seemingly every other heel in the company attempt to make his life as miserable as possible. It looks like the only reason Laurinaitis even keeps Long on the payroll was to embarrass him every chance he could get.

Is there any way for the shamed Long to win back his dignity? Well, getting involved in the PPV bout, helping Cena defeat Laurinaitis and devastating the stuffy WWE executive in the process would certainly be one way to reclaim his pride and once again hold his head high.

Lord Tensai Will Help Laurinaitis Win

3 of 8

Lord Tensai has been strongly linked with Laurinaitis on-screen in recent times, even delivering several vicious beatdowns to Cena on Raw while the GM looked on approvingly.

Laurinaitis may not be much a threat on his own, but with the fearsome Tensai by his side, he suddenly becomes a lot scarier.

With this in mind, it seems inevitable that the monster heel will get involved during the Laurinaitis/Cena bout to aid his boss. Frankly, at this point, it would be more of a shock if he didn't get involved.

Laurinaitis Will Back out at the Last Minute and Put Someone Else in the Spot

4 of 8

Let's face it: No one would put it past the weaselly GM if he backed out of the match on the night of the show and placed someone else, most likely Tensai, in his spot instead.

Such a move would be perfectly consistent with his heel character, and it would free the WWE from the potential problem of putting the retired wrestler in a lengthy pay-per-view match.

Brock Lesnar Will Run in

5 of 8

Is it possible we could see Brock Lesnar get involved in the Cena/Laurinaitis match at Over the Limit?

Of course, per WWE storylines, the former UFC star has quit the company and is now considering legal action after his long list of contractual demands failed to be met by COO HHH. But shrewd wrestling fans know by now that we can't always trust what WWE tells us in angles.

So, Brock will undoubtedly be back at some point, maybe even as early as Over the Limit, and he will seek revenge on Cena for defeating him at Extreme Rules.

Otunga Will Make His Return and Help Laurinaitis Win

6 of 8

David Otunga has been off WWE television recently attending to personal matters, however by the looks of things, he should be able to make his return to the company fairly soon.

Maybe even as early as Over the Limit, he can get illegally involved to help John Laurinaitis defeat John Cena during their match?

Zack Ryder Will Run in and Help John Cena

7 of 8

Let's face it: Former US Champion Zack Ryder has as much reason to be mad at Laurinaitis as anyone. (Laurinaitis convinced Eve to turn on Ryder in the GM match at WrestleMania in order for the executive to gain control over both shows.)

Considering this, it's very possible that Ryder could run in during the Cena/Laurinaitis match and help out Cena.

The match might make sense in the storyline. But it would also lead to a heart-warming  reunion between former friends Cena and Ryder, who've been estranged since Ryder caught his buddy kissing Eve back in February and angrily broke off all contact with "The Doctor of Thugonomics."

Miz Will Get Involved

8 of 8

Mike Mizanin has been struggling to find a significant, lasting role on Raw in recent times, with his considerable talents being wasted in lame programs for the US title and throwaway matches with comedy act Brodus Clay.

Surely running in at Over the Limit and aiding John Laurinaitis in his attempts to defeat John Cena would help put the former WWE Champion back on the map?
