Vince Young Agrees to 1-Year Contract with the Buffalo Bills

Vince Young is the newest member of the Buffalo Bills

A tweet from Mario Williams, in which he congratulated Young on signing with the Bills, broke the news.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen confirmed the deal soon thereafter.

According to Mortensen, Young inked a one-year, $2 million deal, with another $1 million in possible bonuses.

Young went 1-2 as the emergency starter for the Philadelphia Eagles last season, completing 58 percent of his passes with four touchdowns and nine interceptions.

This is the latest move for a Buffalo team that's been extremely active this offseason. They shocked the NFL world by signing Mario Williams to a $100 million deal in March and added former New England Patriot Mark Anderson during the free-agency period as well.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is the team's cemented starter, even after a relatively disappointing 2011 season that saw him throw a league-high 23 interceptions.

Although the Bills addressed their biggest needs in free agency and the draft, they were still without a competent backup signal-caller.

Fitzpatrick didn't miss a game last season, but he did suffer a somewhat mysterious rib injury that marked the start of his poor play last year.

Young is a perfect fit in the quick-strike spread offense Chan Gailey has installed in Buffalo. The Texas Longhorns legend excels when he doesn't need to frequently push the ball down the field and can rely on short tosses and yards after catch to move the football.

Because of his past inconsistency, he doesn't have much leverage to compete for the starting job at this point. This is another reason why he's a logical choice for the Bills; the last thing they need is a quarterback controversy.

However, if Fitzpatrick does suffer an injury in 2012, Young gives the team a much better chance to win a game than incumbent backup Tyler Thigpen. The 28-year-old is an unproven signal-caller who hasn't started a game since 2010.

This is a nice low-risk move by the Bills, a team that needed more stability behind Fitzpatrick.
