Serie a Final Day: Predicting All the Games and What They Will Mean

Jack Alexandros RathbornJun 7, 2018

Serie A has been absolutely marvelous this season.

We have been treated to some top class calcio with the usual drama off the pitch that Italy specializes in conjuring up each season.

One round of fixtures remain, and unfortunately Milan could not take the Scudetto race to the final day after Inter's 4-2 victory in the Derby della Madonnina handed the title to Juventus.

Here, I take a look at each remaining fixtures, identify what is at stake and make a prediction.

Juventus vs. Atalanta

1 of 10

Juventus have already secured the title. Therefore, this is nothing more than a parade for the Bianconeri at first glance.

However, Antonio Conte knows there is still the opportunity to add a cherry on top of their scudetto triumph. With 37 games played, Juve are still unbeaten. If they avoid defeat in the final game, they will be the first side to achieve this feat since Milan in 1992.

Atalanta have already secured safety, despite a six point deduction, so they will not be particularly motivated for this fixture. Therefore, I suspect the Old Lady to celebrate in style with a comfortable victory.

Prediction: Juventus 3 - 0 Atalanta

Fiorentina vs. Cagliari

2 of 10

Both teams have endured thoroughly miserable seasons and will have likely switched off mentally already.

Both clubs sacked managers this season, with Fiorentina disposing of SiniŠa Mihajlović and then sacking Delio Rossi for his moment of madness when he punched Adem Ljajic. Vincenzo Guerini takes charge for a solitary match before the Viola depart for a much needed holiday.

Cagliari sacked Massimo Ficcadenti somewhat harshly early in the season, replacing him with Davide Ballardini. Results did not improve, though, forcing president Massimo Cellino to rehire Ficcadenti until the end of the season.

Moreover the Sardinians have been unable to renegotiate a loan for their stadium, Stadio Sant'Elia. This has forced them to play their remaining home matches at the Stadio Nereo Rocco, 1,100 kilometers away in Trieste.

Only pride is at stake here as neither club is playing for anything, which means a stalemate is on the cards.

Prediction: Fiorentina 0 - 0 Cagliari

Milan vs. Novara

3 of 10

Milan will be licking their wounds after a highly promising season completely unraveled last weekend against fierce rivals Inter, but Massimiliano Allegri's men must regroup for one last match.

The Rossoneri host Novara, who are already relegated, meaning both teams would happily end the season immediately. Milan possess a smidgeon of motivation, with Alessandro Nesta declaring he will play his final match for the club on Sunday.

Gennaro Gattuso is rumoured to also be ending his Milan career on Sunday, as well as Filippo Inzaghi, so the Rossoneri faithful will be out in force to show their appreciation for these legends.

Prediction: Milan 4 - 0 Novara

Parma vs. Bologna

4 of 10

Two of the form teams in Serie A clash on the final day of the season, which should be thoroughly entertaining.

Bologna have been unbeaten for seven matches on a run of three consecutive victories. Parma are also on a terrific run. Inspired by Sebastian Giovinco, the Gialloblu have won six consecutive matches.

Both teams now comfortably in mid-table after flirting with relegation. Only the home side have something to play for. Parma have an outside shot at qualifying for the Europa League.

Roberto Donadoni's men are level on points with Roma, who travel to Cesena, meaning they must better the Giallorossi's result due to losing the head-to-head encounters in the season.

Prediction: Parma 2 - 2 Bologna

Cesena vs. Roma

5 of 10

Cesena, already relegated, host a demoralised Roma side who have largely disappointed this season under Luis Enrique, despite high promise at the beginning.

The Giallorossi would have expected to be competing for the Champions League places but in truth have never been consistent enough to make a serious charge for that coveted third place.

Roma's new owners still hold qualification for the Europa League in high regard, meaning the Lupi must win here to ensure they enter Europe's second continental competition, which will nonetheless globalise the club's brand globally.

However, given that Luis Enrique is widely tipped to leave the club at the end of the season, motivation does not appear to be high, with the manager appearing to have lost the dressing room. Cesena, who have simply not been good enough this season, will want to give their fans something to cheer about in their final home match.

Prediction: Cesena 1 - 1 Roma

Lazio vs. Inter

6 of 10

This is probably the pick of the final day fixtures with Inter, buoyed from their derby victory, travelling to the capital to take on Champions League hopefuls Lazio.

Remarkably, Andrea Stramaccioni has an outside shot at delivering Champions League football for next season, but victory over Lazio is not the only obstacle. The Nerazzurri must also hope Udinese lose away at Catania and Napoli fail to defeat Siena at home.

Lazio have a better chance. Should Udinese lose in Sicily, they will need to defeat Inter to leapfrog the Zebrette in to third place.

Prediction: Lazio 1 - 2 Inter

Chievo vs. Lecce

7 of 10

Chievo ensured their safety from relegation weeks ago and the Verona-based side have seemingly thrown in the towel with Domenico Di Carlo struggling to instill motivation once they had achieved their primary target.

The visitors on Sunday are Lecce, who are likely to be the final side relegated from Serie A in 2012. There is a small chance they can escape, though, but it depends on Genoa losing at home to Palermo (set to be held at a neutral venue).

Should the Giallorossi win here, then they can escape on goal difference due to the head-to-head results not providing a victor.

Prediction: Chievo 0 - 1 Lecce

Genoa vs. Palermo

8 of 10

Genoa have somehow found a way to likely survive the drop. Despite one win in 16 matches, the Rossoblu know that avoiding defeat in their final game will secure survival.

The visitors, Palermo, have little motivation as they cannot be relegated, which means they are the perfect opposition for the Grifone on the final day.

Prediction: Genoa 1 - 1 Palermo

Napoli vs. Siena

9 of 10

Napoli seemingly blew their chances of Champions League football for next season after a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Bologna last weekend.

They must now hope that Udinese lose and Lazio do not win. That way they can jump in to that precious third place.

Walter Mazzarri's future is being debated after the Partenopei's season fell apart after being dumped out of the Champions League by Chelsea. Star players Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi have both been linked with moves away in the summer.

Siena on the other hand have secured safety from relegation and will probably not put up much of a fight here.

Prediction: Napoli 2 - 1 Siena

Catania Versus Udinese

10 of 10

Francesco Guidolin has done a splendid job with Udinese this season.

Despite losing key players Alexis Sanchez and Gokhan Inler to Barcelona and Napoli last summer, the Zebrette are set to trump last season's fourth-place finish. Currently in third position, Udinese are destined to qualify for the Champions League preliminaries for the second consecutive season, despite Italy relinquishing a place in the competition to the Bundesliga this season.

Udinese know that a draw will be enough to seal qualification due to their superior head-to-head record over Lazio. Given that Catania have nothing to play for, Udinese should comfortably manage this.

Prediction: Catania 1 - 1 Udinese
