Mayweather vs Pacquiao: Why Money Must Arrange a Post-Prison Bout with Pac-Man

Jun 7, 2018

Floyd Mayweather needs to schedule a post-prison bout with Manny Pacquiao or risk entirely tarnishing his legacy.

It doesn’t matter that Mayweather is 43-0 in his career. If he continues to duck a fight with Pac-Man, that’s all he’ll be remembered for when all is said and done.

No more excuses.

There’s been a plethora of reasons thrown around for why the fight hasn’t happened. One issue is money. If the two can’t agree to a 50/50 split then one is admitting the other is a bigger draw.

We sure wouldn’t want that.

Add in accusations about drug testing and you get two superstars afraid to fight each other. In Mayweather’s case, it’s simply a matter of him not wanting to have a loss on his perfect record.

Now Mayweather is headed to jail on June 1 as a result of misdemeanor domestic violence. He’s scheduled to serve 87 days before being released.

There’s no doubt that he’ll begin training right away upon his release–but it won’t be to fight Pacquiao.

The accusations and buck-passing that are such a part of our daily lives now are sure to continue even with Mayweather incarcerated. It will only heat up once he’s released.

For Mayweather to leave a legitimate legacy behind, he needs to schedule a post-prison bout with Pac-Man. He needs to agree to a 50/50 split and set a hard date sometime after his release from the penitentiary.

Mayweather is 35 years old and will likely begin a steep decline in his skills as he ages. This is his last chance to fight Pacquiao while in the prime of his career, and he needs to realize that and use it to his advantage.

The bout is a risk worth taking for Mayweather. Even if he ends up losing, it’s better to say he fought the fight rather than ran from it his entire career.

And if he wins, he’ll be considered the best fighter of his generation.

There’s nothing left for Mayweather to accomplish. Boxing fans can only hope that his time in solitude will change his mind. The clarity and time away from money and outside influences will hopefully allow Mayweather to realize this is the perfect way to end his historic career.

The dream-bout is possible, but Mayweather has to want it. Some time away from life in general should see Mayweather coming out of prison with a desire to fight.

Facing Pacquiao in a once-in-a-generation fight would be a good way to satisfy the urge.
