Floyd Mayweather: Examining Each Reason Why Money Won't Fight Pac-Man

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

Not surprisingly, the talk of the boxing world after Floyd Mayweather defeated Miguel Cotto has returned to whether or not the man they call Money will fight Manny Pacquiao.

And, as usual, we've heard more reasons for why it won't happen from Mayweather than why it should.

Let's take a closer look at his reasoning, examining the flaws in his excuses.

Manny Pacquiao Uses Steroids!

You probably thought that hurdle was crossed after Bob Arum said Pac-Man agreed to blood and urine testing to get this fight done.

Nope. As Tim Dahlberg of the Associated Press (via SFGate.com) found out, it's still an issue for Mayweather:

"

Go back and look at the pictures. First, his head is small. Then, all of a sudden, his head just grew? Come on, man. Stop! Stop this man! Come on, man! This (stuff's) so easy. Ray Charles can see this (stuff). Come on. Come on, now! Come on, man. I told you, it's basic common sense. Look at the pictures and tell me this man's head didn't get bigger? This man probably went from a seven and one-fourth to an eight. In a hat, a fitted hat. And you're going to tell me this (stuff) is all natural?

"

He needs to let this go. Nobody is buying this smear campaign, especially since we've been told Pacquiao would submit to the testing. Don't make this about Manny, Mr. Mayweather—if you don't want to fight Pacquiao, just say so.

Bob Arum Is Evil...or Something Like That

Mayweather doesn't like Bob Arum. Bob Arum doesn't like Mayweather. Trying to get these two to actually sit down and negotiate a fight isn't likely.

Here's what Mayweather recently said about Arum, via Deron Snyder of The Root:

"

"The truth is, Bob Arum is not going to let the fight happen," Mayweather said in the post-fight news conference. "It's not on me. I went to Pacquiao and offered him $40 million and told him I would wire him $20 million within 48 hours. He turned me down and said he wanted a 50-50 split. So once he's free from Bob Arum, will the fight happen? Absolutely. But as of now, he's with Bob Arum, so the fight isn't going to happen."

"

And then Arum went ahead and busted out a Hitler reference on an ESPN Radio interview (via Rich Chandler of Off the Bench).

Oh, goody!

"

What do you mean take the test? For two years Pacquiao has said that he will take any drug test whoever administers it so why is that still being talked about by Mayweather? You see Mayweather is from the school of propaganda that Joseph Goebbels, who was (Adolf) Hitler’s publicist, adopted. The more you say things over and over again the more people believe them. The fact is clear that Pacquiao has agreed to unlimited drug testing so that is not an issue.

"

These two hold the power to make this fight happen, and they hold the power to prevent it until the end of time.

But Mayweather's disdain for Arum isn't really the final sticking point. Mayweather is a business man, and if money is to be made, he'll get over any personal issues.

Which brings us to our last point...

The 50/50 Split

For some reason, Mayweather has it in his head that he should make more money on this fight than Pac-Man. He's convinced he's the bigger star, he's the bigger draw and he has the right to keep the fans from the fight if he doesn't earn the bigger paycheck.

Is he serious?

Pacquiao is an equivalent draw, and I don't think that's even questionable. Even if one draws more than the other, it's slight enough that it shouldn't affect the purse in any way. And as Arum mentioned in the ESPN Radio interview, he and Pacquiao would do a 45/45 split, with the remaining 10 percent going to the winner.

Makes sense, right?

I've long held that both camps were responsible for preventing this fight, but I'm starting to believe that Mayweather's demands and expectations are unreasonable. I can't help but think that perhaps Mayweather is ducking this fight, afraid to risk his perfect record.

Do the 50/50 split, Money May, and erase any doubts that fans like me have. Otherwise, fans like me will continue to believe that you're afraid to fight Pac-Man.

And that's way worse than a loss.
