Mayweather vs. Cotto: Breaking Down Junito's Next Potential Opponents
If MIguel Cotto wasn't a "mega star" before, his thrilling bout with Floyd Money Mayweather certainly turned him into one.
Junito may have lost the fight by unanimous decision, but he put more of a beating on Money than anyone else has before. Once the sting of losing wears off, the new mega star will have plenty of fight options moving forward.
Let's take a look at what exactly those options are.
Rematch with Mayweather
This is something that fans want to see now, as Saturday's fight was easily one of the best of the year. Junito attacked Mayweather with a fearlessness and aggression that most fighters couldn't even dream about.
He slowed down near the end, but many argue the final decision should have been at least a few points closer than the judges actually scored it.
Of course, the appeal of this rematch should lessen once Money makes his way into jail. Cotto won't want to wait around for 90 days plus however long it takes Mayweather to choose a next opponent. Junito will move on.
Saul Alvarez
Canelo is coming off an impressive victory over old man Mosley (Sugar Shane), and it appears the 21-year-old is ready for the big time.
Well, I think this would qualify for the big time.
Alvarez is already in Junito's weight class, and most importantly for Cotto, this kid is young, the ladies love him and he'll draw a big crowd.
He's aggressive and hungry, and not only will this be a big draw, it will be extremely entertaining and consist of non-stop action.
Sergio Martinez
This would involve Cotto gaining another six pounds and moving up to the middleweight class, but it would easily be worth it.
Martinez, the WBC and WBO Middleweight champion, sits at an impressive 49-2-2. He's athletic and fast, and his style, much like Canelo's, can draw a crowd.
However, Martinez is also quite arrogant and sometimes keeps his hands down. At the very least, this fight is almost guaranteed to end in a knockout.
If you like excitement, it's tough to get better than that.
