WWE over the Limit Results 2012: Layla Beats Beth Phoenix to Retain Divas Title

The WWE divas division has undergone a dramatic shift in power recently, but Layla is doing her best to stay at the top of the heap after defeating Beth Phoenix at Over The Limit on Sunday night to retain the Divas Championship. 

To say that Layla's original title win was shocking would be an understatement. She made her surprise return at Extreme Rules and defeated Nikki Bella to capture the championship for the first time. 

It's not that we were surprised to see Layla back; she was due to return from the ACL injury that kept her out of action for the last year. But to put her right back in the title picture was odd. The fact that she was taking Beth Phoenix's spot in the match did give WWE an easy angle to set up, and they did. 

Phoenix has been in an interesting predicament since early April. She lost her championship to Nikki Bella in very unusual fashion. She was on the verge of setting a new record for longest title reign, but WWE basically didn't want her to get that record, so she was forced to lose a match with no build or storyline. 

There was an attempt at a storyline injury, but no one was really buying that. Now that she has lost another divas title match, where is the desire to see her keep competing for the title?

Given that Phoenix is one of the best workers in the WWE divas division, she should be running roughshod over these women in order to set up a big match with Kharma at some point down the line. 

Either way, give Layla credit for getting her opportunity and running with it. She started out as nothing more than a dancer on WWECW and has become the top dog in the divas division.
