Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader: Grandma Clings to Dream of Cheering on Crappy Team

Gabe ZaldivarJun 7, 2018

"Age ain't nothing but a number." Or is it, "age is but a number"? Whatever Aaliyah was singing about, she certainly never had Sharon Simmons in mind, but that hardly makes her case any less fitting.

The world is abuzz with the grandma who has an itch that is now being scratched. Simmons may be 55 years old, but she has a need to prove that she can still tackle the biggest of challenges.

CBS DFW reported on Simmons and her need to cheer on a team that will no doubt let everyone in Dallas down anyway.

That pretty much means this cheerleader has a heart of gold.

"

I’m 55. And in May, around the competition, I’ll be 56. On stage, I blend right in with women in their 20s, 30s and up.

I thought, that’s something I never tried. I always wanted to try out. I got real close in my early 20s, but got busy raising my daughter. And I thought, why not now?

"

Simmons joins a wonderful cast of sports characters who continue to defy age. Jamie Moyer is still throwing 80-mile-per-hour heaters, Steve Nash can lead any NBA team and Greg Oden just looks old.

The Cowboys came into the 2010 season as presumptive Super Bowl favorites and then went out and won just six games.

In 2011, the expectations were pulled back just a bit and they went 8-8. Now, nobody outside the Dallas-Fort Worth area could give a damn, so they may in fact win the whole thing.

The question on everybody's mind, or the handful reading this, is whether Simmons will be out there cheering them on.

It could happen, because it has happened.

The Oakland Raiders took time out from signing busts to hire a grandma of their own. According to The Huffington Post, Susie Sanchez, a mother of three and grandmother of one, was hired to be a Raiderette during the 2011 season.

Simmons would be 56 years old during the 2012 season, but I say so the hell what?

She seems to be in fine shape, has a passion for cheerleading and is a published author with a book on fitness.

I will be here crossing my fingers and toes in the hopes that Simmons makes the squad, because I have a thing for people with a tremendous amount of zeal.

You can truly do anything in life, no matter how old you are. Unless, of course, you are Greg Oden.
