NHL Playoff TV Schedule 2012: Keys to a Flyers' Game 5 Victory

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

The Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils will meet in the only game on the NHL playoff schedule Tuesday night, and with the Flyers' season on the line, Game 5 in Philadelphia should be full of excitement and intensity.

The Flyers are arguably the most resilient team in hockey, and they will not be an easy opponent for the Devils to defeat.

Let's look at three keys for the Flyers as they attempt to save their season Tuesday night.

Good Goaltending

Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov played great in Game 4. He will need to be equally as impressive in Game 5 for his team to force a Game 6 in New Jersey on Thursday night.

Bryzgalov has a 5-5-1 record in the playoffs, with a GAA of 3.49 and a save percentage of .885. Those are not the stats that the Flyers envisioned him having when they signed him to a lucrative long-term contract in the summer.

If Bryzgalov plays poorly in Game 5, it's hard to imagine a scenario in which the Flyers save their season.

Move the Puck Well

The Flyers have not been moving the puck fast enough, or accurately enough, out of the defensive zone to combat the strong forecheck of the Devils during this series.

New Jersey is making life difficult for the Philadelphia defensemen because of the constant pressure they are putting on them with the forecheck.

If the Flyers can move the puck up ice and attack the offensive zone efficiently, they will have a great chance to win Tuesday night.

Play Aggressively

I don't think the Flyers thought that the Devils would be able to match them from a physical standpoint, and because of this, Philadelphia needs to open the first period with a ton of energy.

The Flyers can't be pushed around by the Devils, because New Jersey will easily win this game if they take an early lead.

Philly needs to set the tone early and play an aggressive style that epitomizes Flyers hockey.
