Kentucky Derby 2012 Payouts: Big Winnings Will Lower Odds for Preakness
Many bettors are going to see the paydays from the Kentucky Derby and try to jump in on the potentially huge payday action at the Preakness.
You can't blame them. Take a look at the paydays from the Derby and see which one grabs your eye.
Payouts according to kentuckyderby.com
| 19 | I'll Have Another | $32.60 | $13.80 | $9.00 |
| 6 | Bodemeister | $6.20 | $5.60 | |
| 5 | Dullahan | $7.20 |
Yep, I'll Have Another is sitting brilliant on top with a tasty little $32.60 payoff on a $2 bet to win. That isn't all, either. In fact, it pales in comparison to the paydays his win triggered on other bets. Take a look:
| $2.00 | Exacta | $306.60 | ||
| $1.00 | Trifecta | $766.40 | ||
| $1.00 | Superfecta | $48,046.40 | ||
| $1.00 | Double | $408.80 | ||
| $0.50 | Pick 3 | $824.35 | ||
| $0.50 | Pick 4 | $7,781.10 | ||
| $0.50 | Pick 5 | $23,923.80 | ||
| $2.00 | Pick 6 | $675,148.00 |
This is going to play into the final odds of the Preakness for a couple of reasons. The first is that I'll Have Another proved that there is not a single dominant horse going for the Triple Crown this year.
While he ran a nice race, it wasn't overly fast, and it wasn't until a late charge that he was able to win. While he was followed by two horses that were among the favorites, they certainly didn't look dominant, either, and they were not blowing away the pack.
This essentially means that it is any horse's race at the Preakness. This is going to sway a lot of bettors away from favorites and towards horses that provide them with a potentially much bigger bang for their buck.
After all, if you are torn about which horse to bet on, you might as well go with the one that will pay you more. And as their money goes towards those horses, the betting lines will begin to drop.
