NFL Trade Rumors: Latest Updates on Reported Player Movement

The NFL doesn't have the kind of trade market that the other major sports leagues do, so when there is a trade rumor, it's usually big news. While the 2012 NFL draft saw an abnormally large number of trades throughout the event, the league's trade market has died down significantly. 

Still, there are a few rumors floating around right now about players who could be on the move. Here is a look at the latest trade rumors from around the NFL.

Colt McCoy out in Cleveland?

Ever since Cleveland drafted Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden with the 22nd pick in the first round of the draft, Colt McCoy's future with the Browns has been clouded. 

Cleveland reportedly engaged in discussions with the Green Bay Packers about a McCoy swap after the first night of the draft, but now, the team's tune has changed. ESPN's Adam Schefter recently reported that the Browns were not currently looking to trade the 25-year-old signal-caller.

The team is hoping that Weeden can start immediately, and he is clearly the guy they view as their future under center. That is bad news for McCoy's future in town. 

As the season approaches and teams sort out their quarterback situations, I believe Cleveland will indeed trade McCoy away. Seneca Wallace is an adequate backup, and if McCoy doesn't have a future with the team, the Browns should get something in return for him while he still has value. 

Osi Umenyiora and Giants Not Close

Osi Umenyiora wants a long-term contract extension from the New York Giants, and the situation between the two parties is getting ugly. At this point, the Giants don't have the kind of cap space to give Umenyiora the kind of big deal he is looking for.

The Tennessee Titans reportedly had some interest in Umenyiora during the draft, but no trade was consummated. Since then, things have only gotten worse between the Giants and the 30-year-old defensive end. 

Umenyiora can be an elite pass-rusher when he's healthy, but the Giants can't afford to pay him the kind of money he's interested in right now. With teams like the Titans and Ravens looking for pass-rushing help, the Giants could probably get a solid draft pick in return for him. 

It seems like these two parties should just part ways at this point.

Steven Jackson Reportedly Happy in St. Louis

The week of the draft, the NFL Network's Mike Lombardi reported that Steven Jackson was not happy in St. Louis and wanted a new contract. Rotoworld's Evan Silva went on to report that the Rams would try and shop Jackson during the draft.

Two days later, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch disputed those reports, and the Rams claimed they were not aware of any problems. 

The basic thread of that discussion was that the Rams were considering selecting Alabama's Trent Richardson in the draft and that would make Jackson expendable. 

Now that the draft is in the rearview mirror, trading away Jackson would be a big mistake. The Rams didn't add a legitimate No. 1 running back this year, but instead continued to build the roster around the solid core they already have. Jackson is a big part of that nucleus. 

It looks like everything is OK between Jackson and the Rams, as nothing more has surfaced since the trade rumors were shot down.

Lions Looking to Move Alphonso Smith

Alphonso Smith is a 26-year-old cornerback with the Detroit Lions who is athletic and could have a bright future. It just looks like he might be enjoying that future outside of Detroit.

The Lions desperately needed to upgrade their secondary this offseason, and they added three cornerbacks in the draft to help with that. After missing a few weeks during the season thanks to injury, Smith has reportedly become expendable.

NFL.com's Jason LaCanfora reported a few weeks ago that Smith had already been shopped to one team. The Lions acquired Smith from the Denver Broncos in 2010, and he was a second-round pick out of Wake Forest in 2009. 

There are plenty of teams who could use extra cornerbacks, so there should be a market for Smith, even if it is for just a late-round draft pick. Whether he is traded or released, it appears Smith's time in Detroit is over.
