Mayweather vs. Cotto Results: Saul Alvarez Deserves Swing at Money May

David DanielsMay 6, 2012

Manny Pacquiao will have to wait.

In the sport of boxing, nothing is more exciting than when two undefeated fighters face off. Speaking of undefeated fighters, Saul Alvarez easily handled Shane Mosley on Saturday night, proving that he deserves a shot at Floyd Mayweather.

According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael, Mosley said of Alvarez after the fight:

"

His defense was really good and he was really fast. He can go a long ways. When the kids start to beat you, you might need to start going to promoting. I didn't expect him to be that fast or that good. He's up there with the top guys (I've faced). Mayweather is fast, Cotto, all those guys I fought. He's up there with them.

"

You heard the man. Alvarez is up there with Mayweather in terms of speed.

The 21-year-old Mexican fighter known as Canelo has already competed in 41 professional bouts.  He has yet to suffer defeat. And Alvarez turned pro at the age of 15—feel free to call him a boxing prodigy.

Now, his competition hasn’t always been top-notchbut still. Alvarez has defended the WBC Light Middleweight belt four times and is worthy of a showdown with Pretty Boy Floyd.

Miguel Cotto just dealt Mayweather the greatest challenge of his storied career. But did Cotto’s determination fuel the competitive fight or did father time? At 35 years old, Money May is far removed from his prime.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto pointed out Cotto’s lack of momentum heading into Saturday night, writing:

"

A 5-3 showing over the course of his past eight bouts isn't typically the result associated with a boxing superstar. Cotto was beaten badly by Manny Pacquiao over the course of 12 rounds in 2009, and his latest wins have come against inferior competition.

"

At this point in his career, Mayweather isn’t on another planet than Alvarez. The up-and-comer deserves a shot at the world’s No. 1.
