Mike Trout: LA Angels Top Prospect Hits First Home Run of 2012

Kenny DeJohnJun 7, 2018

In the fifth inning of Saturday's 6-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim top prospect Mike Trout showed why the team was so keen on bringing him up to the majors in favor of the recently-released Bobby Abreu.

In the home-half of the fifth inning, Trout stepped up to the plate with one out against Blue Jays starter Kyle Drabek.

Although Drabek has been excellent early on this season, he has had but one issue—he's been somewhat prone to the long ball.

Prior to his start against the Angels, he had allowed four home runs through 30 innings.

That being said, Trout sent the 1-0 pitch over the left-center wall to give the Angels a 2-1 lead. (See the video here.)

Colby Rasmus gave chase and looked to have an opportunity to make a play, but the ball ended up clearing well over the wall.

The home run came at a good time for both Trout and the Angels. Trout had been hitting just .182/.250/.227 with no homers or RBI prior to the contest, and only had four hits in 22 at-bats.

The Angels have been struggling to get the big hit so far this season, and Trout provided them with the spark they needed against the Jays.

With Albert Pujols watching the game from the dugout for the first time in his young Angels career, Trout gave the Angels something hey had been searching for all season long—clutch hitting.

This certainly won't be the last time we see Trout hit one out of the park, as he is one of the most promising prospects in recent memory in all of baseball.
