Kentucky Derby Results: I'll Have Another Will Need More Speed at Preakness
The 2012 Kentucky Derby was a doozy, with I'll Have Another coming through the middle of the pack to overtake Bodemeister and Dullaham by a length-and-a-half. That strategy won't fly when they assemble at the Preakness later this year, though, as it a slightly shorter race than the Derby.
For most of the Derby, I'll Have Another didn't look to be in contention. He may have been intentionally held back by jockey Mario Gutierrez to conserve strength for the final push. If so, that's a veteran move by a man who's just won on his first try at the Derby.
Owner Paul Reddam and trainer Doug O'Neill must be feeling pretty justified in choosing Gutierrez to take the challenge of racing this talented colt. Gutierrez has only been riding I'll Have Another for three months, and before that he was racing up in Canada.
Per CBCNews.com, trainer Glen Todd spoke to this issue before the race:
"It's like playing for the Mexican winter league in baseball, then playing at [Vancouver’s] Nat Bailey Stadium in the single-A league and being in the World Series final a month later...He has gifted hands. I say he's got the hands of an angel and the patience of Job. He waits and waits, that's why I’m not worried about him panicking tomorrow.
"
I'll Have Another will need to pick up the pace at the Preakness if he's going to win the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing this year, but it sounds like Gutierrez is just the man to keep him where he needs to be.
