UFC on FOX 3 Results: What We Learned from Danny Castillo vs. John Cholish

Vince CareyJun 7, 2018

In a tough lightweight clash, Danny Castillo defeated John Cholish by unanimous decision.

Both men stood toe to toe for the majority of the bout, but with the stand up game turning out to be virtually even, it was Castillo’s takedowns that ended up winning the fight.

The win pushes Castillo to an impressive 4-1 record inside the UFC, while Cholish falls to 1-1 inside the Octagon.

What We'll Remember About This Fight

It wasn’t a particularly memorable fight, but Castillo did just enough to secure each round on the judges’ scorecards.

Both men showed off decent striking, but it was Castillo that proved to be the superior mixed martial artist with his wrestling ability late in the rounds.

What We Learned About Castillo

Castillo showed that he is smart enough to make sure he wins a decision.

A lot of fighters might keep standing and trading punches after four and a half minutes of boxing, but Castillo used his head and shot for takedowns near the end of the rounds to secure the victory.

His standup looked like it had improved quite a bit since his last Octagon win over Anthony Njokuani, and if he is able to fight to his gameplan he can be a solid fighter in the lightweight division.

What We Learned About Cholish

The UFC obviously has a lot of faith in Cholish since they threw him in there with a tough veteran like Castillo in just his second UFC bout.

If Cholish is able to land a bit more often on his feet and stop a takedown or two in his next fight, he should be able to bounce back with a win against an opponent that’s more on his level.

What's Next for Castillo

A fight against Mark Bocek, who recently won his second in a row against John Alessio at UFC 145, would make a ton of sense for both fighters.

What's Next for Cholish

Cholish should test his luck against Eiji Mitsuoka, who lost his UFC debut to Takanori Gomi at UFC 144. The loser of that one could be unemployed soon after.
