Floyd Mayweather: Why Win over Miguel Cotto Would Do Nothing for His Legacy

Wes ODonnellJun 7, 2018

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has never lost a fight in his professional boxing career.

The 35-year-old American is 42-0 with 26 knockouts on his brilliant resume. He's held seven world titles in his career and is considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport today.

Mayweather walked away from boxing for a little while, but he came back and continued his reign of dominance in the sport immediately. After a near two-year retirement, Mayweather returned to defeat big names such as Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosley and Victor Ortiz.

None of these fighters, however, were named Manny Pacquiao, and the superfight the world wants to see continues to elude each and everyone of us.

It looked as though we'd finally get our wish this spring, but instead Mayweather steps into the ring tonight with a guy Pacquiao's already defeated.

Miguel Cotto comes into this fight knowing full well that he's in for trouble. He finally avenged his loss to Antonio Margarita a few months back, but a one-eyed Margs is nothing compared to Mayweather.

But that doesn't bode well for Mayweather, because people don't care if he wins anymore; they just want to see him fight Pacquiao.

Cotto is a good fighter, but he's far from great and isn't someone who will do anything for Money's legacy.

Mayweather can fight eight more guys and finish his career 50-0, but it still won't matter if he never gets in the ring with the one other fighter who has dominated during his generation.

Unfortunately, Cotto is just another name on his list and another paycheck to cash.

In the grand scheme of things, this fight will be forgotten.
