UFC on Fox 3: Fighters with Skills to Outshine Feature Fight
Nate Diaz and Jim Miller are the featured fighters for UFC on Fox 3 tonight, but a few fighters have the skills and matchup to put on a better show.
Diaz and Miller are both gamers, but if Miller has his way, the fighters will spend a good amount of time on the ground. Tactically, this could be brilliant, as both fighters are accomplished jiu-jitsu artists, but most fans want to see stand-up fighting.
You may not get that from Diaz and Miller, but you should definitely see fireworks from the following fighters:
Johny Hendricks
Hendricks has hungry caveman power, so the big, less-than-manicured beard fits him. He is short, compact and packs a wallop in his accurate punches.
He nearly knocked a curly lock from the head of Charlie Brenneman in their 2010 bout (shown below).
He is a solid wrestler, but he uses the skill as a back up. In his previous fights, he has shown the desire to throw hands most of all.
If fans want to see more hand play, Hendricks has the right opponent. Josh Koscheck will not run from a stand-up confrontation. He has some solid boxing skills and tons of pride. All of that could equal a Fight of the Night award.
This fight could be the best of the event, and it could thrust Hendricks to the next level amongst 170-pound fighters.
Lavar Johnson
Johnson is a beast of a heavyweight in size and power, but he has underachieved to this point. He has shown a vulnerability to submission artists, as he has been tapped out in two of his last three bouts.
Most recently he destroyed the rough and tumble Joey Beltran. He KO'd Beltran in the first round with some serious uppercuts (shown below).
We could see more of the same, as the 6'4", 230-pound Johnson is set to take on the 5'11" Pat Barry tonight.
Johnson doesn't have a great deal of stamina, which has led to his submission losses, but he throws jaw-breakers. This one could be over in the first round with an explosive KO by Johnson.
If it goes to the second or third round, Barry may grab the victory. Either way, there will be fireworks.
