Kentucky Derby Odds 2012: Which Horses Are Better Bets in the Rain?

Rain, rain go away, leave us alone on Derby Day.

Thunderstorms hit Churchill Downs last night, and there is potential for more scattered storms to hit the area today.

Barring any crazy lightning in the area, the race will go on.

If rain does come down, it will affect every horse in the field, but not everyone negatively.

Here's a look at horses who are better bets should the dirt become mud. Trinniberg (40-1)

Breaking from the No. 9 post, the expected pacesetter in the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby is a great longshot bet if rain comes down.

He's still expected to get out the fastest and by doing so, he should get clear of any potential mud.

If he can get out in front of the pack and stay clean, there is no telling how big of a lead he might—its much easier to run when nobody is kicking mud if your face.


Hansen (11-1)

It is no surprise that the rest of these horses all line up outside of Trinniberg, and we start with Hansen, a speedster in his own right.

On a clean track he might sit back just a bit and let Trinniberg tire out, but if rain comes down, he'll use his brilliant speed to get clear of the others as well.

He's got the stamina to go the distance and could run away from the field if he gets clear.


Gemologist (8-1)

The undefeated colt's odds have already dropped from the morning line, which gives you even a better price as of now.

He's an interesting horse and runs from a great post if the rain stays away. If it rain does come down he'll have to run a bit harder than he wants early, but he's a strong closer who, if he follows Hansen, should be able to find a spot to kick from down the stretch.


I'll Have Another (14-1)

Running from the 19th post, I'll Have Another will get a chance to keep away from majority of the early trouble should the rain come down.

He's a threat to run for the money regardless, but is in a better place should the rain come down. Running from the outside should keep him clear for a while and he could kick it in down the stretch.
